Rudolf Besier
Rudolf Wilhelm Besier (2 July 1878 – 16 June 1942) was a Dutch/English dramatist and translator best known for his play ''The Barretts of Wimpole Street'' (1930). He worked with H. G. Wells, Hugh Walpole and May Edginton on dramatisations. Early life and career Besier was born in Blitar, East Java (Dutch East Indies), in 1878 as the son of an English mother, Margaret Ann Collinson, and the Dutch soldier Rudolf Wilhelm Besier, who died six months before he was born and after whom he was named. He had some limited success early in his career in England, which began with ''The Virgin Goddess'' (1906) produced by Otho Stuart and with music by Christopher Wilson. Then followed a series of plays, mainly dramas, but including some satires and comedies. In 1912 he collaborated with H. G. John Eugene Vedrenne (July 13, 1867-February 12, 1930), often known as J. E. Vedrenne, was a West End theatre producer who co-managed the Savoy Theatre with Harley Granville-Barker, and then (from 1904 to 1907, also with Granville-Barker) the Royal Court Theatre. During their time at the latter, they premiered several of George Bernard Shaw's plays, including ''John Bull's Other Island'' and ''Major Barbara''. His partnership with Granville-Barker ending in 1907, Vedrenne then became associated with Lewis Waller at the Lyric Theatre, and in 1911 with Dennis Eadie at the Royalty Theatre The Royalty Theatre was a small London theatre situated at 73 Dean Street, Soho. Beatrice Kay (April 21, 1907– November 8, 1986) was an American singer, vaudevillian, music hall performer, and stage and film actress. Background Born in New York City as Hannah Beatrice Kuper, Kay performed as Honey Kuper and Honey Day for part of her career in vaudeville, radio, motion pictures, sound recordings, night clubs, and television. Her career began at the age of six as "Little Lord Fauntleroy" in stock theater in Louisville, Kentucky. She went on to become a headliner at Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe Nightclub in New York. She was on ''The Mercury Theatre on the Air'' (directed by Orson Welles), and eventually hosted a radio show, ''The Beatrice Kay Show'', in 1946. Margaret Whittaker Lawrence (August 2, 1889 – June 9, 1929) was an American stage actress known for her performances on Broadway and other venues. Margaret Scudamore (13 November 1881 – 5 October 1958) was an English theatre and film actress who began in '' ingenue'' roles before achieving a prolonged career in stage and screen support roles. She and her first husband, Roy Redgrave (1873-1922), are considered to be the first members of the now renowned Redgrave acting dynasty. ''Secrets'' is a 1933 American pre-Code Western film directed by Frank Borzage and starring Mary Pickford in her last film role. The film is a remake of ''Secrets'' (1924), a silent film starring Norma Talmadge, which was based on a 1922 play of the same name. In 1930, Pickford had begun a remake of the Norma Talmadge ''Secrets'' titled ''Forever Yours'' with director Marshall Neilan and actors Kenneth MacKenna and Don Alvarado. After spending $300,000, Pickford stopped production and destroyed all the negatives p93 because she was unhappy with the results. May Edginton (originally Helen Marion Edginton, 20 December 1883 – 17 June 1957) was an English writer who had over 50 popular novels published in London. The Fulton Theatre was a Broadway theatre located at 210 West 46th Street in Manhattan, New York City, that was opened in 1911. It was renamed the Helen Hayes Theatre in 1955. The theatre was demolished in 1982. Since the former Little Theatre became the current Helen Hayes Theatre, the Fulton Theatre is now sometimes referred to as the First Helen Hayes Theatre. History Built by the architects Herts & Tallant for Henry B. Harris and Jesse Lasky, it was originally opened on April 27, 1911, under the name Folies-Bergere as a dinner theatre with vaudeville.
