The second legislature of the Rwandan Senate commenced in 2011 and ended in 2019. The Senate is the upper house of the Parliament of Rwanda ( rw, Inteko Ishinga Amategeko; french: Parlement. Senate (Rwanda)
The upper house of the Parliament of Rwanda ( rw, Inteko Ishinga Amategeko; french: Parlement) is the Senate (''Sena''/''Sénat''). The Senate has 26 members elected or appointed for eight-year terms: 12 elected by provincial councils, eight appointed by the President of the Republic to ensure the representation of historically marginalized communities, four by the National Consultative Forum of Political Organizations, and two elected by the staff of the universities (one public, one private). Bernard Makuza
Bernard Makuza (born 30 September 1962) is a Rwandan politician who was Prime Minister of Rwanda from 8 March 2000 to 6 October 2011. He also served as President of the Senate of Rwanda from 14 October 2014 to 17 October 2019. Background Makuza's father was Anastase Makuza, who served as a minister during Grégoire Kayibanda's presidency. Like his father, Bernard Makuza attended Saint Léon Minor Seminary of Kabgayi. Career Makuza was a member of the Republican Democratic Movement (MDR) before the party was dissolved on 14 April 2003 because of its history of promoting genocide ideology. Makuza resigned his membership in the MDR before being appointed Prime Minister. In 2006, during his term as Prime Minister, Makuza identified as belonging to no party. Nyanza District
Nyanza is a district (''akarere'') in Southern Province, Republic of Rwanda. Its capital is Nyanza town, which is also the provincial capital. ''Nyanza'' is a Bantu word meaning ''lake'', which probably refers to the small body of water created by a dam to the west of Nyanza town and sometimes referred to by the local residents as “Ikiyaga” or lake. which probably refers to a large lake to the west of Nyanza city. Jean-Damascène Ntawukuriryayo (born 8 August 1961) is a Rwandan politician who served as President of the Senate of Rwanda from 2011 to 2014. He also served as Minister of Health in Rwanda. He became President of the Senate in October 2011, and also served for a time as Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies. Background Ntawukuriryayo was born in Runyinya Rwanda in 8 August 1961. Burera District
Burera is a district (''Akarere'') in Northern Province, Rwanda. Its capital is Cyeru. Geography and tourism The district lies in the northern part of Rwanda, adjacent to the Ugandan border, and between the cities of Ruhengeri and Byumba. Marie Claire Mukasine (born in 1959) is a Rwandan lawyer, politician and civil servant. From 2011 to 2019 she was a member of the Senate of Rwanda, and has served as a permanent secretary in Rwanda's Ministry of Infrastructure. In 2020 she was appointed Chairperson of the National Commission for Human Rights in Rwanda (NHCR).
