Seattle Sounders FC was a professional beach soccer team based in United States. They were affiliated with Seattle Sounders FC, a Major League Soccer team, and competed in the 2011 and 2012 Mundialito de Clubes, an international beach soccer competition for clubs. Brazilian coach Marcelo Mendes was the head coach for the team at both tournaments; the rosters were formed from a special draft held in São Paulo. Beach Soccer
Beach soccer, also known as beach football, sand football or beasal, is a variant of association football played on a beach or some form of sand. Whilst football has been played informally on beaches, the introduction of ''beach soccer'' was an attempt to codify rules for the game. This was done in 1992 by the founders of Beach Soccer Worldwide, a company set up to develop the sport and responsible for the majority of its tournaments. History Beach football ( or ''futebol de areia'') started in Brazil, more precisely at Rio de Janeiro. In 1950 the first official tournament was created to unite neighborhood small tournaments that happened since 1940. It has grown to be an international game. Seattle Sounders Football Club is an American professional men's soccer club based in Seattle. The Sounders compete as a member of the Western Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). The club was established on November 13, 2007, and began play in 2009 as an MLS expansion team. The Sounders are a phoenix club, carrying the same name as the original Sounders franchise that competed in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1974 to 1983. The club's majority owner is Adrian Hanauer, and its minority owners are the estate of Paul Allen, Drew Carey, and 14 families from the Seattle area. Mundialito De Clubes
The Mundialito de Clubes ( en, link=yes, Club World Cup) is an international club beach soccer competition contested between top men's clubs from around the world. The tournament is loosely similar to the FIFA Club World Cup in association football, however participating teams are not regional champions, instead entering via invitation. Organised by Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW), the competition was founded by BSWW with Brazilian sports agency Koch Tavares in 2011. The first five editions hosted in Brazil whilst the sixth saw the event hosted in Europe; the tournament should not be confused with BSWW's existing BSWW Mundialito, Mundialito, which takes place in Portugal for national teams. Marcelo Cláudio Mendes Pereira (2 March 1979), known as Marcelo Mendes, is a Brazilian football coach and former player who played as a defensive midfielder. He is the current assistant coach of Operário Ferroviário. Playing career Born in Cajapió, Maranhão, Marcelo Mendes started his career with local side Americano-MA before moving to Juventus-SP, where he made his debut as a senior in 1999. In 2001 he moved to Ceará, and featured regularly for the club as they retained their Série B status. Marcelo Mendes moved to Joinville for the 2004 campaign, and subsequently failed to settle for a club in the remainder of his career. Draft (sports)
A draft is a process used in some countries (especially in North America) and sports (especially in closed leagues) to allocate certain players to teams. In a draft, teams take turns selecting from a pool of eligible players. When a team selects a player, the team receives exclusive rights to sign that player to a contract, and no other team in the league may sign the player. The process is similar to round-robin item allocation. The best-known type of draft is the entry draft, which is used to allocate players who have recently become eligible to play in a league. The second Mundialito de Clubes (or Club World Cup) was a beach soccer tournament that took place at the Praia do Sol stadium at the Arena Guarapiranga sport complex, located near Represa de Guarapiranga, a reservoir located in São Paulo, Brazil from 12 – 19 May 2012. The stadium has a seating capacity of 3,500 spectators. The inaugural Mundialito de Clubes (or Club World Cup) is a beach soccer tournament that will take place at the Praia do Sol stadium at Represa de Guarapiranga, a reservoir located in São Paulo, Brazil from 19 – 26 March 2011. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 3,500 spectators.
