Seara Vermelha
''Red Field'' (Portuguese: ''Seara Vermelha'') is a Brazilian Modernist novel. It was written by Jorge Amado. It has not been published in English. Background Jorge Amado published ''Red Field'' in 1946. In 1945, Brazil had entered a period of “redemocratization” and Amado was elected federal deputy for São Paulo as a candidate of the Brazilian Communist Party. He had long campaigned for the rights of political prisoners accused of being communists. He wrote ''The ABC of Castro Alves'', a biography of the poet from Bahia, before going into exile in Uruguay and Argentina, where he researched the life of the revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes, which he published in 1942 as ''The Knight of Hope''. Red Field is dedicated to Prestes and it includes bits of verse by Castro Alves and a quotation from Prestes himself. Jorge Amado
Jorge Leal Amado de Faria (10 August 1912 – 6 August 2001) was a Brazilian writer of the modernist school. He remains the best known of modern Brazilian writers, with his work having been translated into some 49 languages and popularized in film, notably ''Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (novel), Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands'' in 1976. His work reflects the image of a Mestiço Brazil and is marked by religious syncretism. He depicted a cheerful and optimistic country that was beset, at the same time, with deep social and economic differences. He occupied the 23rd chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters from 1961 until his death in 2001. He won the 1984 Nonino#Winners, International Nonino Prize in Italy. Modernist
Modernism is both a philosophical and arts movement that arose from broad transformations in Western society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement reflected a desire for the creation of new forms of art, philosophy, and social organization which reflected the newly emerging industrial world, including features such as urbanization, architecture, new technologies, and war. Luís Carlos Prestes (January 3, 1898 – March 7, 1990) was a Brazilian revolutionary and politician who served as the general-secretary of the Brazilian Communist Party from 1943 to 1980 and a senator for the Federal District from 1946 to 1948. One of the leading communists in Brazil, Prestes has been regarded by many as one of Brazil's most charismatic yet tragic figures for his leadership of the 1924 tenente revolt and his subsequent work with the Brazilian communist movement. The 1924 expedition earned Prestes the nickname ''The Knight of Hope.'' Beginning in 1924, as a young army officer, Prestes was a leading figure in an abortive military revolt. The Knight Of Hope
''The Knight of Hope'' or ''The Life of Luis Carlos Prestes'' (Portuguese: ''O Cavaleiro da Esperança'' ''ou Vida de Luis Carlos Prestes'') is a 1942 book by Jorge Amado, a biography of the well-known Brazilian revolutionary Luis Carlos Prestes. It has not been published in English. ''The Knight of Hope'' salutes the heroism of Prestes. In 1924 he set out on a 25,000 kilometer march that became known as the Prestes Column. In 1935 he founded the National Liberation Alliance and led the so-called "Communist Conspiracy". He was imprisoned in 1936 by the Getúlio Vargas dictatorship, along with his pregnant wife. The book expresses considerable support for Prestes's positions and indeed admiration for his person. As Amado observed, the book was written “with passion, about someone who is loved”.
