It's a sequel to Building a Province: 60 Alberta Lives, which Brennan published in 2000, and Alberta Originals, which appeared in 2001. Brian Brennan (author)
Brian Anthony Brennan (born October 4, 1943) is an Irish-Canadian author and historian who specializes in books about the colourful personalities of Western Canada's past. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he migrated to Canada in 1966 and has lived in Calgary, Alberta, since 1974. He spent 25 years as a staff writer with the ''Calgary Herald'' writing columns and feature stories. Brennan was part of an attempt by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada to organize a union local for the newsroom and negotiate a first contract with the ''Calgary Herald''. Before and during the eight-month strike by journalists in 1999 and 2000, Brennan was a member of the union's bargaining committee. When the strike ended in June 2000 with the dissolution of the union, he left the Herald to devote himself full-time to writing books. Florence Lassandro
Florence Lassandro (; born Filumena Costanzo ; 1900 – May 2, 1923) was an Italian-Canadian bootlegger who was the only woman to be hanged in Alberta. Early life Lassandro was born in Cosenza, Italy, immigrating with her family to Canada in 1909, and marrying Carlo Sanfidele (who later changed his surname to Lassandro) on October 16, 1915 in Fernie, British Columbia. Sanfidele worked for Emilio Picariello as a chauffeur and hotel manager for Picariello. Sanfidele and Lassandro also worked with Picariello in his bootlegging operations, when Prohibition was declared in Alberta in 1916, and 1917 in British Columbia. Lassandro was also Picariello's mistress. Picariello was an entrepreneur based in Blairmore, Alberta. He was engaged in many legal businesses including manufacturing ice cream and operating the Alberta Hotel in Blairmore; however this became a front for his bootlegging activity. Donald Hugh Mackay
Donald Hugh Mackay (March 22, 1914 – January 26, 1979) was the 26th Mayor of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Early life He spent his youth in Calgary and Drumheller, receiving most of his public school education in Drumheller. In the early 1930s, Mackay settled with his family in Calgary. He was employed first by the ''Calgary Albertan'' and later for the radio station CJCJ. By 1943, at the age of twenty-nine, he was Manager of Station CJCJ. In his early adulthood MacKay joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He remained a participating member of the Church the rest of his life. Florence "Flores" LaDue (1883–1951) was the stage name of vaudeville performer and champion trick roper ''Grace Bensel''. Biography Born Grace Maud Bensel in Montevideo, Minnesota, her mother died while she was an infant and her father, C.D. Bensel, was a criminal lawyer and later a judge. She spent most of her young life on a Sioux reservation where her grandfather was the government agent. Bensel left home, by some accounts running away to join a wild west show, and began performing under the name Florence LaDue. By 1905 she was appearing with Cummins’s Wild West Show and Indian Congress. While there, she met Guy Weadick, who was also an accomplished rider and roper, and they married in 1906. George Guy Weadick (February 23, 1885 – December 13, 1953) was an American cowboy, performer and promoter. Today, he is best known as the founder of the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada. He was married to famed cowgirl, Florence LaDue. Weadick was the first to be inducted in the Builder category in the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Vivian MacMillan
The John Brownlee sex scandal occurred in 1934 in Alberta, Canada, and forced the resignation of the provincial Premier, John Edward Brownlee. Brownlee was accused of seducing Vivian MacMillan, a family friend and a secretary for Brownlee's attorney-general in 1930, when she was 18 years old, and continuing the affair for three years. MacMillan claimed that the married premier had told her that she must have sex with him for his own sake and that of his invalid wife. She had, she testified, relented after physical and emotional pressure.
