Scottish Council For Women's Trades
The Scottish Council for Women's Trades was an organisation in the early 1900s that campaigned for improvements in the working conditions of women. The organisation was originally formed in 1894 as the Glasgow Council for Women's Trades. After two investigations were conducted by Margaret Irwin into the workplace conditions for female shop assistants, finding that women were being expected to work 12–17 hours per day, and being forbidden from sitting down while at work, the Glasgow Council for Women's Trades drafted a bill that would require employers to make suitable seating available to their staff. Margaret Irwin (trade Unionist)
Margaret Hardinge Irwin CBE (13 January 1858 – 23 January 1940) was a suffragist, and Scottish labour activist who held important posts in the trade union movement. Early life Irwin was born off the coast of Peru on board the ship ''Lord Hardinge'', from which she took her middle name. Her father James Ritchie Irwin was the captain of the ''Lord Handinge''. She grew up in Broughty Ferry in Forfarshire, and was educated privately and at the High School of Dundee, then studied at the University of St Andrews, from which she received a "Lady Literate in Arts" (LLA) degree, followed by attendance at the Glasgow School of Art and Queen Margaret College. She then became involved in the women's rights movement, and also bought and ran a fruit farm in Blairgowrie. A private member's bill is a bill (proposed law) introduced into a legislature by a legislator who is not acting on behalf of the executive branch. Seats For Shop Assistants Act 1899
The Seats for Shop Assistants Act 1899 is a piece of legislation produced by the Parliament of the United Kingdom that attempted to combat the practice of retail employers expecting their female employees to stand for long periods (at the time a typical working day could be longer than twelve hours) by providing at least one seat for every three female employees. The act also prescribed a fine for not complying of up to three pounds for a first offence, and a fine between one and five pounds for a second offence. The "Seats for Shop Assistants (Scotland) Bill" was drafted by the Glasgow Council for Women's Trades, and introduced as a private member's bill by MP John McAusland Denny, first read in the House of Commons on 21 February 1899 and had its second reading on 12 April where it was debated.
