Schwann Cell
Schwann cells or neurolemmocytes (named after German physiologist Theodor Schwann) are the principal glia of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Glial cells function to support neurons and in the PNS, also include satellite cells, olfactory ensheathing cells, enteric glia and glia that reside at sensory nerve endings, such as the Pacinian corpuscle. The two types of Schwann cells are myelinating and nonmyelinating. Myelinating Schwann cells wrap around axons of motor and sensory neurons to form the myelin sheath. The Schwann cell promoter is present in the downstream region of the human dystrophin gene that gives shortened transcript that are again synthesized in a tissue-specific manner. During the development of the PNS, the regulatory mechanisms of myelination are controlled by feedforward interaction of specific genes, influencing transcriptional cascades and shaping the morphology of the myelinated nerve fibers. Henry Schwann
Henry Sigismund Schwann (19 November 1868 – 27 May 1931) was an English first-class cricketer and stockbroker. The son of Frederick Sigismund Schwann, he was born in November 1868 at North Houghton, Hampshire. He was educated at Clifton College, where he played for the school cricket team and recorded a then record high score in an away match for the college of 209 not out against Sherborne School. From Clifton he went up to Corpus Christi College, Oxford. While studying at Oxford, he played first-class cricket for Oxford University in 1890, making six appearances which included playing in The University Match against Cambridge at Lord's. He scored 204 runs in his six matches, at an average of 18.54 and a high score of 70. Theodor Schwann
Theodor Schwann (; 7 December 181011 January 1882) was a German physician and physiologist. His most significant contribution to biology is considered to be the extension of cell theory to animals. Other contributions include the discovery of Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system, the discovery and study of pepsin, the discovery of the organic nature of yeast, and the invention of the term "metabolism". Early life and education Theodor Schwann was born in Neuss on 7 December 1810 to Leonard Schwann and Elisabeth Rottels. Leonard Schwann was a goldsmith and later a printer. Theodor Schwann studied at the Dreikönigsgymnasium (also known as the Tricoronatum or Three Kings School), a Jesuit school in Cologne. Schwann was a devout Roman Catholic. In Cologne his religious instructor , a priest and novelist, emphasized the individuality of the human soul and the importance of free will. Schwann Catalog
The ''Schwann Catalog'' (previously ''Schwann Long Playing Record Catalog'' or later ''Schwann Record And Tape Guide'') was a catalog of recordings started by William Schwann in 1949. The first edition was hand-typed and 26 pages long, and it listed 674 long-playing records (see LP record). By the late 1970s, over 150,000 record albums had been listed in Schwann. The company was honored by the record industry both at the 25th anniversary (1974) and 35th anniversary (1984). The Schwann Catalog changed hands several times, sold in 1976, then again in the late 1980s to Stereophile, then to Valley Media in the 1990s. In 2002, the company was purchased at a bankruptcy auction by Alliance Entertainment Corporation. Content The Schwann Catalog initially focused on classical LPs, but also included sections on popular music, jazz, musical shows, "Spoken and Misc.", and so on.
