Schulz is a common German and Jewish-Ashkenazi family name from Germany, particularly Northern Germany. The word ''Schulz'' originates from the local official title of Schultheiß or ''(Dorf-)Schulz(e)'', meaning village headman or constable/sheriff in the medieval sense (akin to today's office of mayor). Ferdinand Schulz
Ferdinand Schulz (18 December 1892 – 16 June 1929) was a German aviator and glider pilot who broke a contemporary record by gliding and staying aloft for 14 hours and 7 minutes. He popularized hang-gliding in Germany. He was called the ''"Icarus of East Prussia"''. Life and work Schulz was born in Pissau, East Prussia, the eldest child of school teacher Ferdinand and Rosi née Scharnick. He studied at a Catholic school in Pissau where his father was the sole teacher. In 1904 he went to Braunsberg, staying with his aunt and attending the grammar school. In 1905 he went to Rössel and in 1911 went to the teacher training college in Thorn. He served in the Danzig Infantry Regiment No. 128 and then in the 3rd Battalion in Danzig-Langfuhr. He was wounded during World War I and received a medal for bravery on the front. He then transferred to the air force in 1917 and flew Halberstadt fighter planes. Erwin Schulz
Erwin Wilhelm Schulz (27 November 1900 – 11 November 1981) was a German member of the Gestapo and the SS in Nazi Germany. He was the leader of ''Einsatzkommando 5'', part of ''Einsatzgruppe C'', which was attached to the Army Group South during the planned invasion of Soviet Union in 1941, and operated in the occupied territories of south-eastern Poland and Ukrainian SSR committing mass killings of civilian population, mostly of Jewish ethnicity, under the command of SS-Brigadeführer Otto Rasch. Career In April 1918, Schulz, then 17, volunteered for service in the Imperial German Army. However, World War I ended before he saw combat. Schulz was discharged in 1919. Johann Abraham Peter Schulz
Johann Abraham Peter Schulz (31 March 1747, Lüneburg – 10 June 1800, Schwedt) was a German musician. He is best known as the composer of the melody for Matthias Claudius's poems "Der Mond ist aufgegangen" and " Wir pflügen und wir streuen", and the Christmas carol "Ihr Kinderlein kommet". Life Schulz attended St. Michaelis school in Lüneburg from 1757 to 1759 and then the Johanneum there from 1759 to 1764. In 1765, he was the student in Berlin of composer Johann Kirnberger, and then taught in Berlin himself. In 1768 Kirnberger recommended Schulz for the position of music teacher and accompanist to the Polish Princess Sapieha Woiwodin von Smolensk. Hugo Paul Friedrich Schulz (August 6, 1853 – July 13, 1932) was a German pharmacologist from Wesel, Rhenish Prussia. He studied medicine in the universities of Heidelberg and Bonn, where he did scientific work in the physiological institute of Eduard Friedrich Wilhelm Pflüger (1829-1910). In 1877 he earned his doctorate, and afterwards worked in the pharmacological institute of Karl Binz (1832-1913) at Bonn. In 1883 he was appointed professor of pharmacology at the University of Greifswald. Schulz is known for his research of a phenomenon known as hormesis, showing that toxins can have the opposite effect in small doses than in large doses. This he demonstrated in experiments using chemical compounds on yeast cells. Hermann Schulz (24 August 1872 – 20 August 1929) was a German social democratic politician, a member of the Weimar National Assembly and the Weimar German parliament. Schulz was born in Elbing, West Prussia (Elbląg, Poland). He was trained as a metal worker and worked as a lathe operator in Berlin from 1900 to 1911. He moved back to Elbing in 1911 where he worked for the German Metal Workers' Union. During World War I Schulz served in the German Army from 2 August 1914 to 2 December 1918.
