School District 71 Comox Valley is a school district on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. This includes the communities of Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland as well as the surrounding rural areas and the adjacent islands of Denman and Hornby. History The Comox Valley has a rich history of settlement, industrial development, and community growth. School District 71 developed alongside this local history, operating schools to meet the needs of the Comox Valley community since the late nineteenth century. The Comox School District was formed on July 30, 1870 while the area was still part of the Colony of Vancouver Island. Comox () is a town on the southern coast of the Comox Peninsula in the Strait of Georgia on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Denman Island
Denman Island, or Sla-dai-aich (Taystayic), its Indigenous name, is one of the Northern Gulf Islands and part of the Comox Valley Regional District of British Columbia, Canada. It is a member of the Islands Trust group of islands and is home to a small community of 1391 year-round residents. History Denman Island was first inhabited by Indigenous peoples including the Pentlatch and Sliammon as evidenced by middens, gravesites, and oral history. The site most recently occupied by Pentlatch people was previously named Village Point but is now called Denman Point. That village was occupied until the 1862 smallpox epidemic severely reduced its population and the survivors moved to join the K'ómoks people in nearby Comox. Hornby Island of British Columbia, Canada, is one of the two northernmost Gulf Islands, located near Vancouver Island's Comox Valley, the other being Denman Island. École Highland Secondary School
Highland Secondary School is a secondary school located in Comox, British Columbia, Canada in School District 71. The school opened in 1978 and educates approximately 650 students annually in grades 8–12. The school's sports teams all go by the name of the Highland Raiders. Students are separated into two school houses, which are colour-coded as gold and blue respectively. Each house has their own advisory system made up of groups whose names correspond to their colour and number (G-15, B-6,etc.). Every student attends their advisory group ("AG") for 10 minutes daily after their first class. As of 2012 the International Baccalaureate (IB) program was implemented into the school.
