Sava-class Submarine
The ''Sava'' class was a class of diesel-electric attack submarines built for the Yugoslav Navy during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Developed by the Brodarski Institute (BI) from Zagreb, the two strong class was built by the Brodogradilište specijalnih objekata (Special objects shipyard) in Split. They were intended as a replacement for the aging s. Compared to the earlier , the ''Sava'' class was longer with more powerful armament that consisted of six torpedo tubes that could also be used for minelaying. With the start of the Croatian War of Independence, both submarines were relocated to Boka Kotorska where they would be commissioned with the new FR Yugoslav Navy of, what would eventually become, Serbia and Montenegro. Brodosplit
Brodosplit is the largest shipyard in Croatia, located in the Supaval bay, on the north side of the Split peninsula. History The company was founded in 1922 by a merger of shipyards in the area and has been in its current location since 1932. With significant development in the latter half of the 20th century, it has grown into one of Croatia's largest shipyards. When Croatia was a part of Socialist Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav Navy's submarines designed by Zagreb's Brodarski Institute were built in this shipyard, which was called ''Brodogradilište specijalnih objekata'' (Special objects' shipyard.) Minelayer
A minelayer is any warship, submarine or military aircraft deploying explosive mines. Since World War I the term "minelayer" refers specifically to a naval ship used for deploying naval mines. "Mine planting" was the term for installing controlled mines at predetermined positions in connection with coastal fortifications or harbor approaches that would be detonated by shore control when a ship was fixed as being within the mine's effective range. Before World War I, mine ships were termed mine planters generally. Lora Naval Base
Lora is a harbor in the northwestern part of Split, Croatia, in the Bay of Kaštela. It is currently used as a naval base of the Croatian Navy. Located right next to the Brodosplit shipyard, it has been an important naval base of Yugoslav Navy (1945–1991) and its headquarters. During the Croatian War of Independence, it was the site of the Lora prison camp. Ever since its founding in 1991, Lora naval base has served as the HQ of Croatian Navy. In this capacity, it is the home port for nearly all ships of the fleet. Lora is also the HQ of Croatian Coast Guard. Laying the keel or laying down is the formal recognition of the start of a ship's construction.
