Satan Takes A Holiday
''Satan Takes a Holiday'' is an album by Anton Szandor LaVey, released through Amarillo Records in 1995. The collection is an eclectic body of songs LaVey constructed using his synthesizer. A few of these songs are standards, and their composers well known. Nevertheless, LaVey chose all these songs to create deliberate modes of feeling and mood. His original treatments of many of these songs, and others similar to them in context and style, were performed on a variety of organs that he mastered over the course of his life. He performed many such songs in burlesque houses, various circuses, carnivals, and roadhouses. LaVey is joined on this recording by Blanche Barton, High Priestess of the Church of Satan and Nick Bougas, director of LaVey's film biography, '' Speak of the Devil: The Canon of Anton LaVey''. Track listing #"Satan Takes a Holiday" – written in 1937 by bandleader Larry Clinton. Arranged for Hammond Novacord. Originally used as background music for "magic a ...

Girl Friend Of The Whirling Dervish
"(The) Girl Friend of the Whirling Dervish" is a novelty song written by Harry Warren, Al Dubin, and Johnny Mercer. In an Orientalist jazz musical style and with a Turquesque confusion of Islamic, Indian, and Western cultural motifs, it recounts the amorous adventures of the eponymous unfaithful sweetheart of an oblivious Whirling Dervish amid a number of musicians who compete for her affections. The song first appeared in the 1938 Warner Brothers film '' Garden of the Moon'', where it was performed by John Payne, Johnnie Davis, Jerry Colonna, and Joe Venuti and His Swing Cats, once as a short instrumental and once as a lengthy vocal version in an elaborate Busby Berkeley production number featuring a turban-wearing band and the heavily-mustached Colonna as a veiled "girl friend." In popular culture Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians had a minor hit with the song in 1938. On October 28, 1938, the Midwestern jazz novelty group, The Hoosier Hot Shots, recorded a curtailed ve ...

The first artist to record it was Leila Negra, and there were also versions in Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian. Fred Rauch later wrote new German lyrics, and titled it "Glaube Mir (Answer Me)". This version sold half a million copies for Wolfgang Sauer, a singer and pianist. Hammond Organ
The Hammond organ is an electric organ invented by Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert and first manufactured in 1935. Multiple models have been produced, most of which use sliding drawbars to vary sounds. Until 1975, Hammond organs generated sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup, and then strengthening the signal with an amplifier to drive a speaker cabinet. The organ is commonly used with the Leslie speaker. Around two million Hammond organs have been manufactured. The organ was originally marketed by the Hammond Organ Company to churches as a lower-cost alternative to the wind-driven pipe organ, or instead of a piano. It quickly became popular with professional jazz musicians in organ trios—small groups centered on the Hammond organ. Jazz club owners found that organ trios were cheaper than hiring a big band. Jimmy Smith's use of the Hammond B-3, with its additional harmonic percussion feature, inspired a g ...

Biography Clinton was born in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He became a versatile musician, playing trumpet, trombone, and clarinet. The Clinton band's repertoire was split between pop tunes of the day ("I Double Dare You", "Summer Souvenirs", "Deep Purple"), ambitious instrumentals penned by Clinton like "Satan Takes a Holiday" (recorded by Tommy Dorsey) and the most popular, "A Study in Brown", which begat four sequels in different "colors", and swing adaptations of classical compositions. This last category swept th ...

Bandleader
A bandleader is the leader of a music group such as a rock or pop band or jazz quartet. The term is most commonly used with a group that plays popular music as a small combo or a big band, such as one which plays jazz, blues, rhythm and blues or rock and roll music.''Club Date Musicians: Playing the New York Party Circuit''. Bruce A. MacLeod. University of Illinois Press. (1993) Most bandleaders are also performers with their own band, either as singers or as instrumentalists, playing an instrument such as electric guitar, piano, or other instruments. Roles The bandleader must have a variety of musical skills. A bandleader needs to be a music director who chooses the "setlist" (the list of songs that will be played in a show), sets the tempo for each song and starts each song (often by "counting in"), leads the start of new sections of songs (e.g., signalling for the start of a guitar solo or drum solo) and leads the endings of each song. The bandleader is also onstage with the ...
