Keris Mas
Keris Mas (10 June 1922 – 9 March 1992), born Kamaluddin Muhamad, was a prominent Malaysian literary figure and was one of the founders of the As as '50 literary movement. His numerous contributions to Malay language literature (especially in the short story form) led him to become Malaysia's first National Laureate in 1981. Biography Born in Kampung Ketari, Bentong, Pahang. Keris Mas received his early education at the Malay School in his village, before going to the Tawalib school in Sumatra, and the Muallimin Al-Islamiah College. After World War II, he joined the Parti Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya (''The National Malay Party of Malaya'') (PKMM) wing in Pahang, and was actively involved in its branch in Singapore. Shahnon Ahmad
Dato' Haji Shahnon bin Ahmad (January 13, 1933 – December 26, 2017) was a Malaysian writer, a National Laureate, and a Member of Parliament. He was awarded with the National Literary Award in 1982. He was also a Professor Emeritus at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang. Brief biography Shahnon was born on 13 January 1933 as the youngest child to a peasant family in Banggol-Derdap, Sik, Kedah; his father Ahmad Abu Bakar hailed from Medan in the Dutch East Indies while Kelsum Mohd Saman was a Pattani native whose father came to settle in Malaya from Kampong Poseng in southern Thailand in the late 19th century. Shahnon's father had been previously working as a staff at the surveyor department, then a postman until the Second World War when the British forces hired him as a clandestine spy. Usman Awang
Wan Osman Wan Awang, also known by his pen name Usman Awang (12 July 1929 – 29 November 2001) was a Malaysian poet, playwright, novelist and Malaysian National Laureate (1983). Brief biography Wan Osman was born into a poor peasant family. He graduated from 6th grade of his local Malay school. During the Japanese occupation, he was kidnapped by Japanese soldiers to Singapore to do forced labour there. After the war, he joined the police force and served in Johore and Malacca between the years of 1946 to 1951. In 1951, he moved to Singapore, where he initially worked as a proofreader and then as a reporter for the newspaper ''Melayu Raya''. He later joined the weekly '' Mingguan Melayu'' - in 1952, its daily counterpart ''Utusan Melayu'' began publishing his first poems and stories on both these newspapers. Arena Wati
Muhammad Dahlan Abdul Baing (or Andi Mohammad Dahlan Andi Buyung) (30 July 1925 – 25 January 2009), whose pseudonym was Arena Wati, was a Malaysian writer. He was declared as the Malaysian National Laureate in 1988. His writings were in the Malay language. He also known as Duta Muda dan Patria. Life He was born in Jeneponto, Makassar, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Arena received his early education in Dutch schools, Hollands Indische School, before the outbreak of World War II. During World War II, at the age of 18, Arena Wati became a seaman. His experience in this field improve his skills in writing and produce a good novel. He completed his secondary education at Makassar in 1953. After graduating from school, Arena Wati became a journalist and work with publishing company in Singapore, and then to Johor Bahru and Brunei. Muhammad Haji Salleh
Muhammad ( ar, مُحَمَّد; 570 – 8 June 632 CE) was an Arab religious, social, and political leader and the founder of Islam. According to Islamic doctrine, he was a prophet divinely inspired to preach and confirm the monotheistic teachings of Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. He is believed to be the Seal of the Prophets within Islam. Abdullah Hussain
Datuk Abdullah Hussain , (25 March 1920 – 31 December 2014) was a Malaysian novelist and writer. He received the Malaysian National Laureate in 1996 which made him the 8th recipient of the award. Early years Abdullah was born on 25 March 1920 in Sungai Limau Dalam, Yan, Kedah. Between the years 1926 and 1931 he received his early education at the Sekolah Melayu Sungai Limau and continued his studies at Sekolah St. Michael Alor Setar from 1932 until 1933 and also at the Anglo Chinese School, Alor Setar until 1935. Ahmad Kamal Abdullah
Ahmad Kamal Abdullah (30 January 1941 – 27 October 2021) was a Malaysian poet, novelist, playwright, literary critic and Malaysian National Laureate (2011). He was known under the pseudonym Kemala. Biography His father, Abdullah Hj. Daud was an alumnus of the Kuala Kangsar Malay College in which its admission was restricted to children of the elite class, while his paternal grandfather was influential in the village as its main religious teacher and imam. His mother, Rukiah Amir, on the other hand was a well-versed storyteller and poet. From 1958 to 1962, Kemala studied at Sultan Idris Teacher's College (''Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris'', now the Sultan Idris Education University) in Tanjung Malim. Zurinah Hassan
Zurinah Hassan (born 13 June 1949) is a Malaysian national laureate. She is the first female writer to be conferred the title National Laureate which in Malaysia is officially known as Sasterawan Negara. Biography Zurinah Hassan was born in Alor Setar, Kedah. She studied at the Universiti Sains Malaysia for the first degree. After working for fifteen years, she took an early retirement to devote her time writing. Besides writing she also pursued a master's degree at Universiti Putra Malaysia and later a PhD degree at University of Malaya. In 1974, Hassan authored ''Sesayup Jalan'', and subsequently published poems, short stories and novels, some of which were translated into French, Spanish, and Russian. She won the Putera Poetry Award in 1984.
