The Santa María Dam ( es, Planta Hidroeléctrica Santa María) is a reinforced concrete gravity dam and power plant spanning the Samalá River in Zunil, Escuintla, Guatemala.INDE''Hidroeléctricas'' Consulted: 09-12-2010. The dam's reservoir has a total capacity of 215,500 m3. The water is transported to the powerhouse through 614 m long pressure pipe. The plant has 3 different turbines ( and ) with a total installed capacity of 6.88 Megawatt, MW. The plant has a level declination of 101 m, and a designed flow of 2.35 m3/s for unit 1 and 2, and 2.42 m3/s for unit 3. Samalá River
The Samalá is a river in southwestern Guatemala. Its sources are in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, Sierra Madre, San Carlos Sija, Valle De Écija range, in the departments of Quetzaltenango (department), Quetzaltenango and Totonicapán (department), Totonicapán. Quetzaltenango (department)
Quetzaltenango is a department in the western highlands of Guatemala. The capital is the city of Quetzaltenango, the second largest city in Guatemala.Rouanet et al 1992, p.14. A gravity dam is a dam constructed from concrete or stone masonry and designed to hold back water by using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the foundation to oppose the horizontal pressure of water pushing against it.
