Santa Maria Dei Servi, Bologna
Santa Maria dei Servi is a Roman Catholic basilica in Bologna, Italy. It was founded in 1346, as the church of the Servites, Servite Community of the Blessed Virgin Mary and was designed by Andrea da Faenza, a head friar and architect who also assisted Antonio di Vincenzo on the monumental Basilica of San Petronio. In the 20th century, Pope Pius XII granted the church the status of "basilica". Architecture Interior The basilica is 100 metres long by 20 metres wide. It has the form of a Latin cross but the transepts do not project beyond the aisles. The shallow apse is five segments of an octagon, as is common in Italian Gothic churches. It was designed in the Gothic architecture, Gothic style with pointed arches throughout. At the death of Padre Andrea in 1396, the work was not complete. History The church is built on the site of the former Church of San Clement, which was acquired by the Servite order in the Medieval era. Santa Maria dei Servi, or simply known as the ''Chiesa dei Servi'', or more fully as the Church of the Nativity of the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a 14th-century, Roman Catholic church that faces the Via Roma (once Sant’Egidio) in Padua, region of the Veneto, Italy. This is the parish church in the vicariate of the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta governed by the Servite Order (order of the Servants of Mary). The church contains outstanding works of art including a wooden crucifix by Donatello. History Construction of the church between 1372 and 1390 was patronized by Fina Buzzaccarini, wife of the Prince of Padua, Francesco Da Carrara the Elder. Santa Maria dei Servi is a Baroque-style, active Roman Catholic church and Monastery located in Via Santa Croce in Sansepolcro, province of Arezzo, region of Tuscany, Italy. The cloistered convent is still run by the order and operates a guest-house. History The original church is from construction started in 1294, traces of this construction are represented by a few buttresses on the left side of the church. The church was consecrated in 1382. Between 1717 and 1727 the church underwent a baroque refurbishment, including a new facade and bell-tower. The church dome above the presbytery is unique in Sansepolcro.
