Onuphrius
Onuphrius ( el, Ὀνούφριος, Onouphrios; also ''Onoufrios'') lived as a hermit in the desert of Upper Egypt in the 4th or 5th centuries. He is venerated as Saint Onuphrius in both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic churches, as Venerable Onuphrius in Eastern Orthodoxy, and as Saint Nofer the Anchorite in Oriental Orthodoxy. Life and legends Onuphrius was one of the Desert Fathers who made a great impression on Eastern spirituality in the third and fourth centuries, around the time that Christianity was emerging as the dominant faith of the Roman Empire. At this time many Christians were inspired to go out into the desert and live in prayer in the harsh environment of extreme heat and cold, with little to eat and drink, surrounded by all sorts of dangerous animals and robbers. Sant'Onofrio (Rome)
Sant'Onofrio al Gianicolo is a titular church in Trastevere, Rome. It is the official church of the papal order of knighthood Order of the Holy Sepulchre. A side chapel is dedicated to the Order and a former grand master, Nicola Canali is entombed there. It is dedicated to Saint Onuphrius and located on the Janiculum. Since 1946, the church has been under the care of the American congregation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. It was built in 1419—1439 on the site of an ancient hermitage, as part of a cloistered monastery of the Hieronymites that existed here from the 15th-16th century. The attached cloister was added in the mid-15th century. A member of the College of Cardinals is sometimes given title to the church, that is, designated cardinal deacon or cardinal priest of Sant'Onofrio. Eremo di Sant'Onofrio al Morrone (Italian for ''Hermitage of Sant'Onofrio al Morrone'') is an hermitage located in Sulmona, Province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo, Italy)., dating back to the thirteenth century. A monk by the name of Pietro Angelerio living at this hermitage later became Pope Celestine V. The hermitage is located at an altitude of 620 meters, and can only be reached via a steep path from the village of Badia, on the eastern edge of the Valle Peligna. History Pietro Angelerio arrived in Abruzzo between 1239 and 1241, and settled in a cave on the slopes of Mount Morrone. He would later have a small church built there called "Santa Maria in Ruta" or "in Gruttis."
