Chiesa Parrocchiale di Sant'Agostino is a Roman Catholic parish church on Piazza Sant'Agostino in central Modena, Italy. History and description Founded in the 14th century by the Order of Augustinian Hermits, the church was rapidly refurbished between 1662 and 1663 by the Duchess Regent Laura Martinozzi for the funeral of her husband, Alfonso IV. The new church was designed by the architect ''Gian Giacomo Monti'' and became the Este Pantheon for the celebration of Este family funerals. The rich series of decorations was designed by the Jesuit ''Domenico Gamberti'' who in 1659 had also overseen the funeral of '' Francesco I Este'', the first duke to be commemorated in the Church. During Duke Francesco's funeral, as was customary at the time, the church was completely transformed by a series of sumptuous temporary decorations. Tomaso Barisini, better known as Tommaso da Modena and sometimes called Tomaso Baffini (1326 – 1379) was an Italian painter of the mid-14th century. Biography Tommaso trained in Venice and worked mostly in Northern Italy, but also worked for the court of the Emperor Charles IV in Prague. In Karlstein Castle, two pictures on wood are attributed to him, an ''Ecce Homo'' and a ''Madonna''. A ''St Catherine'' is in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Perhaps Tommaso's most important work was done in Treviso. In 1352 as an expression of the Dominican intellectual vocation Tommaso was commissioned to paint a fresco cycle of 40 Dominicans scholars at their desks including Popes, Cardinals, theologians, and philosophers. Antonio Begarelli
Antonio Begarelli, also known as Begarino (1499–1565) was an Italian sculptor. He was born at Modena, and is said to have been instructed by Giovanni dell'Abbate, the father of the painter Niccolò. Begarelli worked chiefly in Modena, where many churches are decorated with his sculptures in terra-cotta; and in his later years also at Parma. These are free standing figures, nearly life-size, grouped together above altars in the chapels and apparently intended to replace pictures. This peculiar adaptation of sculpture was first used in Modena by Guido Mazzoni, called II Modanino, a highly gifted realist artist. The assertion that Begarelli was associated with Correggio seems to be incorrect. Francesco Stringa
Francesco Stringa (1578–1615) was an Italian painter of the early- Baroque era, active mainly near his native city of Modena. He apprenticed initially, in 1595, in the Roman studio of Federico Zuccari, but soon came under the influence of the ascendant style of the Carracci. He returns in 1602–1606, to work for the Este court at Modena. In 1607, he worked with Ercole dell'Abate in decorating the ceiling of the Sala del Consiglio in the Palazzo Comunale. He also painted an ''Annunciation'' for Formigine and a ''Madonna and saints'' for the parish church of Fanano. In 1608, he became court painter for Duke Ranuccio I Farnese in Parma, where he painted a number of canvases now in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. He died in Parma.
