Sanjiv Ridge Mine
The Sanjiv Ridge mine, formerly the Corunna Downs mine is an iron ore mine operated by Atlas Iron and located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, south of Marble Bar and from Port Hedland. Ore from the mine is transported overland via road train to the Utah Point Bulk Commodities Berth at Port Hedland. Overview Approval to construct an iron ore process plant at Corunna Downs was received in September 2017. The mine was proposed to consist of five open pits, with an anticipated of iron ore to be mined at the location over a six year period. The crushed ore would then be transported by road train with a payload up to to the Utah Point Bulk Commodities Berth at Port Hedland. The Corunna Downs was temporarily suspended by Atlas in 2017 because of low iron ore prices, having initially intended to spend A$53 million to develop the project. Corunna Downs Airfield
Corunna Downs Airfield was a secret Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base at Corunna Downs, south of Marble Bar in the Pilbara region of Western Australia during World War II. In 1942 the RAAF built a secret airbase on Corunna Downs Station, adjacent to the 1891 homestead. The airfield, created especially for B-24 Liberator long-range heavy bombers, comprised two intersecting bitumen runways, a north–south (165°) runway and an east–west (107°) runway . No. 73 Operational Base Unit was responsible for operating the airfield during World War II. The RAAF No. 24 Squadron, No 25 Squadron and the United States Army Air Corps 380th Bomb Group flew long range missions against Japanese shipping and base facilities in the Dutch East Indies. Corunna Downs Station
Corunna Downs Station is a pastoral lease that was once a sheep station but now operates as a cattle station in Western Australia. It is located approximately south of Marble Bar and south east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Several watercourses run through the property, including Coongan River, Emu, Sandy, and Badgeyong Creeks, which also contain several permanent pools of water. The landscape is mostly flat spinifex country. The lease was first taken up by John Withnell and William McLean in July 1886. The Mackay brothers, along with Donald and Roderick Louden, took up a holding in 1887. The Mackays' lease consisted of three parcels of each. In 1890, George Dudley and Alfred Howden Drake-Brockman took up land on what is now Mount Edgar Station. Howden selected the Corunna Downs land and named it after the Battle of Corunna. The Mt Webber mine is an iron ore mine operated by Atlas Iron and located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, from Port Hedland, to where the ore is transported. Mt Webber, opened in 2014, is the company's primary operation. Overview The mine officially opened in July 2014 and was, at the time, the company’s fifth operation, initially contributing of iron ore per annum to the company's production. At the time of opening, the iron ore price was at a two year low but, at the same time, labour costs had also been lower, allowing for reduced construction costs.
