Sandžak Faction
The Sandžak faction or Sandžak lobby (Sandžački lobi),; known in Bosnian as ''Sandžaklije'', was one of the two main divisions of the Bosnian government and the ruling Party of Democratic Action () during the Bosnian War (1992–95; see Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina). It was made up of military hardliners and settlers (migrants) from Sandžak, a region divided between SR Serbia and SR Montenegro (see Bosniaks of Serbia and Bosniaks of Montenegro). Commander Sefer Halilović and politician Ejup Ganić belonged to the faction. According to Sarajevan writer Željko Vuković, Sandžak immigrants controlled most of the municipal, political and military power during the war. On the eve of the war, some 160,000 people of Sandžak origin lived in Sarajevo. There is a view that Sandžak immigrants were prior to the war second-class citizens, who during the war climbed the social ladder. Bosnian Language
Bosnian (; / , ) is the standardized variety of the Serbo-Croatian pluricentric language mainly used by ethnic Bosniaks. Bosnian is one of three such varieties considered official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with Croatian and Serbian. It is also an officially recognized minority language in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo. Bosnian uses both the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets, with Latin in everyday use. It is notable among the varieties of Serbo-Croatian for a number of Arabic, Persian and Turkish loanwords, largely due to the language's interaction with those cultures through Islamic ties. Bosnian is based on the most widespread dialect of Serbo-Croatian, Shtokavian, more specifically on Eastern Herzegovinian, which is also the basis of standard Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin varieties. Ejup Ganić
Ejup Ganić (born 3 March 1946) is a Bosnian engineer and politician who is the founder and chancellor of Sarajevo School of Science and Technology. He served one term as President of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1997 to 2001. He holds a ScD (doctor of science) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Early life Ganić was born in Sebečevo village near Novi Pazar municipality in the Sandžak geographical region of Serbia, then Yugoslavia. He is the founder and current president of Sarajevo School of Science and Technology and a regular professor of engineering science at the school. Bosniak History
Bosniaks are a South Slavic ethnic group, native to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region of Sandžak. The term Bosniaks was re-instated in 1993 after decades of suppression in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Bosniak Assembly adopted the ethnonym to replace "Bosnian Muslims." Scholars believe that the move was partly motivated by a desire to distinguish the Bosniaks from the fabricated and imposed term Muslim to describe their nationality in the former Yugoslavia. These scholars contend that the Bosniaks are distinguishable from comparable groups (such as the Croats and the Serbs) due to a collective identity based on a shared environment, cultural practices and experiences. Bosnian Nationalism
Bosnians ( Bosnian language: / ; / , / ) are people identified with the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina or with the region of Bosnia. As a common demonym, the term ''Bosnians'' refers to all inhabitants/citizens of the country, regardless of any ethnic, cultural or religious affiliation. It can also be used as a designation for anyone who is descended from the region of Bosnia. Also, a Bosnian can be anyone who holds citizenship of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and thus is largely synonymous with the all-encompassing national demonym ''Bosnians and Herzegovinians''. Fahrudin Radončić
Fahrudin Radončić (; born 24 May 1957) is a Bosnian media magnate, entrepreneur, investor, and politician who served as the Minister of Security on two occasions. He is the founder of the ''Dnevni avaz,'' the best-selling newspaper in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is the founder and current president of the Union for a Better Future of BiH. Ramiz Delalić
Ramiz Delalić (15 February 196327 June 2007), widely known by his nickname Ćelo (The word means "baldy" - a common nickname in Sarajevo for criminals, because their heads were shaven during their time spent in prison), was a Bosnian gangster and warlord, commander of the 9th Mountain Brigade in Sarajevo. He was one of several prominent underworld figures engaged by the Party of Democratic Action in preparations for the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Delalić gained notoriety as the main suspect who stood trial before a local court for the killing of Nikola Gardović on 1 March 1992. Selmo Cikotić
Selmo Cikotić (born 25 January 1964) is a Bosnian politician serving as Minister of Security since 2020. He was also the Minister of Defence from 2007 to 2012. He is a member of the Party of Democratic Action. Cikotić's career in the army spanned for 20 years, being in the Yugoslav People's Army, the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Bosnian War, and lastly in the Army of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sefer Halilović
Sefer Halilović (born 6 January 1952) is a former general and commanding officer of the Bosnian Army during the 1992–95 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2001, he was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and acquitted of all charges in 2005. Early life and education Halilović was born in Taševo, a hamlet in the Prijepolje municipality in the Sandžak geographical region of Serbia, then Yugoslavia. He attended the military academy in Belgrade in 1971 for three years and in 1975 he attended the military school in Zadar where he became an Officer in the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). Bosniaks are an ethnic group in Montenegro, first introduced in the 2003 census. According to the last census from 2011, the total number of Bosniaks in Montenegro was 53,605 or 8.6% of the population.
