Sandy Campbell (British Army Officer)
Alexander Fraser Campbell, GC (2 May 1898 – 18 October 1940), known as Sandy Campbell, was a British Army officer of the Royal Engineers who was posthumously awarded the George Cross for conspicuous gallantry in defusing a bomb in October 1940. Triumph Engineering Works unexploded bomb On 14 October 1940 at Chapel Street, Coventry, Second Lieutenant Campbell along with Sergeant Michael Gibson and Sappers W. Gibson, R. Gilchrest, A. Plumb, R.W. Skelton and Driver E.F.G. Taylor were tasked to deal with a unexploded bomb. The sappers spent almost four days uncovering the bomb which was found to contain a very damaged delayed-action fuse mechanism which could not be removed in situ. Though any electrical charge within the fuse was thought to have dissipated, Campbell still applied a discharge tool. Sandy Campbell (April 22, 1922 – June 26, 1988) was a Broadway actor, and later editor and publisher, mainly for his life-partner, Donald Windham. Early life Sandy Campbell was born in New York City in 1922, the son of the owner of a chemical manufacturing company. He attended Kent School, Connecticut and then studied at Princeton University. Career After college, Sandy Campbell tried to become an actor in Broadway; he was in ''Life with Father'', ''Spring Awakening'', and ''A Streetcar Named Desire''. In more than 20 years of acting he played alongside actors by the like of Marlon Brando, Spencer Tracy, Jessica Tandy, Tallulah Bankhead, Lynn Fontanne, Alfred Lunt, Lois Smith. On the screen he can be seen in ''Shades of Gray'' (1948), ''Man Against Crime'' (1949) and ''The Philco Television Playhouse'' (1948). Campbell was a book collector, avid reader and publisher. Sandy Campbell (born 11 November 1966) is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He played for South Sydney, Canterbury-Bankstown and Eastern Suburbs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition. Background Campbell represented the Australian schoolboys before being graded by Canterbury-Bankstown in 1985. Playing career Campbell made his first grade debut for Canterbury in round 2 1986 against Cronulla-Sutherland at Belmore Oval. In his debut year Campbell played in two of the club's finals matches, the 16-2 victory over South Sydney and the 16-0 semi final loss against the Parramatta Eels.
