Sandwich Bay (Labrador)
Sandwich Bay, (Inuktitut: ''Natsitok''https://www.mun.ca/labmetis/pdf/toponymy%20final%20report.pdf ) is a natural bay on the coast of Labrador in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The principal permanent settlement is Cartwright, Labrador, Cartwright, located at the south entrance to the inner part of the bay. Other settlements along the bay include Paradise River, Labrador, Paradise River and North River, Labrador, North River. Both of these communities are located at the outlets of the rivers of the same name into the bay. Inuktitut
Inuktitut (; , syllabics ; from , "person" + , "like", "in the manner of"), also Eastern Canadian Inuktitut, is one of the principal Inuit languages of Canada. It is spoken in all areas north of the tree line, including parts of the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, to some extent in northeastern Manitoba as well as the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. It is one of the aboriginal languages written with Canadian Aboriginal syllabics. It is recognised as an official language in Nunavut alongside Inuinnaqtun, and both languages are known collectively as ''Inuktut''. Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. Cartwright, Labrador
Cartwright is a community located on the eastern side of the entrance to Sandwich Bay, along the southern coast of Labrador in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It was incorporated in 1956. Cartwright is the largest settlement in NunatuKavut. Cartwright has been a settled community since 1775. In 1775, Captain George Cartwright, for whom the place is named, settled there, establishing a fish and fur trading business. He left Labrador in 1786, maintaining a business interest there until it was sold to Hunt and Henley in 1815. It was again sold in 1873 to the Hudson's Bay Company and has remained under company ownership ever since. Since 2002, Cartwright has been connected by road (a section of the Trans-Labrador Highway, Route 516) with Blanc Sablon, Quebec, where there is a car ferry to Newfoundland. Paradise River, Labrador
Paradise River is a community on the southwestern coastline of Sandwich Bay in southeastern Labrador, Canada. Located at the outlet of the river for which the community is named, it is situated along Route 516, the Cartwright Highway, which connects Paradise River to the town of Cartwright as well as the Trans-Labrador Highway (Route 510), which in turn is connected to Happy Valley-Goose Bay among many communities along Labrador's southern coast. The Paradise River provided an important route between the coast and the Labrador interior for native peoples prior to European settlement. The community of Paradise River was established in 1775 by George Cartwright. The people of Paradise River were involved in the cod and salmon fishery in the summer months and fur trapping and hunting in the winter. Route 516, also known as Cartwright Highway, is a north–south highway in southeastern Labrador in the Canada, Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
