Sandwich (Urbanna, Virginia)
Sandwich, also known as the Old Customs House, is a historic home located at Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia. It was built about 1758, and is a three bay rectangular plan brick structure is built into the side of a steep hill with stories on the west up-hill facade, and stories on the east side. The house was renovated in the 1930s. Also on the property are a contributing brick wall, and a formal boxwood garden site, which includes four contributing garden buildings. Andrew Jackson Montague purchased the property in 1934. Urbanna is a town in Middlesex County, Virginia, United States. Urbanna means “City of Anne” and was named in honor of England's Queen Anne. The population was 476 at the 2010 census. Geography Urbanna is located at (37.637796, −76.573149). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2), of which, 0.4 square miles (1.1 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (17.65%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 543 people, 266 households, and 160 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,286.5 people per square mile (499.2/km2). There were 354 housing units at an average density of 838.7 per square mile (325.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.58% White (U.S. Census), 3.50% Black, and 0.92% from two or more races. Middlesex County is a county located on the Middle Peninsula in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,625. Its county seat is Saluda. History This area was long settled by indigenous peoples; those encountered by Europeans were of the Algonquian-speaking peoples, part of loose alliance of tribes known as the Powhatan Confederacy. The Nimcock had a village on the river where Urbanna was later developed. English settlement of the area began around 1640, with the county being officially formed in 1668 from a part of Lancaster County. This settlement pushed the Nimcock upriver. The county's only incorporated town, Urbanna, was established by the colonial Assembly in 1680 as one of 20 50-acre port towns designated for trade. Andrew Jackson Montague
Andrew Jackson Montague (October 3, 1862January 24, 1937; nickname "Jack") was a Virginia lawyer and American politician. He served as the 44th Governor of Virginia, from 1902 to 1906, and a Congressman from 1912 until his death in 1937. A Democrat, Montague is best remembered as the first Virginia governor since the American Civil War not to have served in the Confederate military. Initially a Progressive, Governor Montague expanded the state capitol building, supported public education and the Good Roads Movement and opposed the Martin Organization.
