Sandon, British Columbia
Sandon is in the foothills of the Selkirk Mountains in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The near ghost town lies off BC Highway 31A, and is at the confluence of Sandon Creek into Carpenter Creek. By road, the place is about east of New Denver and west of Kaslo. Name origin The name derives from Sandon Creek, which acknowledges John Sandon. Among the prospectors who inundated the Slocan Valley in the fall of 1891, Sandon staked several claims, including the Slocan Star, registered as being on Sandon Creek. With partner Bruce White, he preempted land at the creek mouth. He sold his interest in the Slocan Star to White that December for $500, a property that would become extremely valuable. To help meet the demand from the surrounding mining camps, John Sandon's vegetable farm included seven acres in potatoes. Frank Sandon
Frank Sandon (3 June 1890 – 29 May 1979) was a British swimmer. He competed in the men's 100 metre backstroke event at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Sandon studied mathematics at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge finishing as a Wrangler. He joined the Home office but found he was 'too remote from real people' so after the First World War became a schoolmaster. He taught at Highgate School from 1921 to 1923 and at various grammar schools, becoming headmaster of Plymouth Corporation Grammar School, founded in 1562, for eight years until its closure in 1937. A strong believer in co-education, in 1941 Sandon was appointed headmaster of Millom County Secondary School in Millom, Cumberland. Sandon Dock was a railway station on the Liverpool Overhead Railway, adjacent to the dock of the same name. It was opened on 6 March 1893 by the Marquis of Salisbury. The station had a hydraulic lift bridge which enabled a section of track to be lifted up to allow large vehicles to pass underneath. Sandon Dock was a dock on the River Mersey, England, and part of the Port of Liverpool. Situated in the northern dock system, it was east of Sandon Half Tide Dock, to which it was once connected. History It was designed by Jesse Hartley and opened in 1851. Originally the dock basin was considerably larger and consisted of six graving docks to the north. Sandon and Canada Dock Goods railway station was situated adjacent to the dock, and opened by the Midland Railway in 1873. The goods station could be accessed via the Huskisson Goods Tunnel, which was opened by the Cheshire Lines Committee in 1882 and closed in 1969. The goods station continued being used until 21 July 1969, and was later demolished. Sandas (more commonly spelt as "Sandan") was the Anatolian ( Hittite) lion god during the Classical period. He used to be represented in association with a horned lion, and often resided inside a pyre surmounted by an eagle. Sandan was often associated to the Greek god Herakles, and sometimes to Marduk. Earl of Harrowby, in the County of Lincoln, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1809 for the prominent politician and former Foreign Secretary, Dudley Ryder, 2nd Baron Harrowby. He was made Viscount Sandon, of Sandon in the County of Stafford, at the same time, which title is used as a courtesy title by the heir apparent to the earldom. His son, the second Earl, held office under Lord Palmerston as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Lord Privy Seal. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the third Earl. Malcolm John (Mal) Sandon (born 16 September 1945) is an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1982 to 1988, representing Chelsea Province, and of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 1996, representing the electorate of Carrum.
