The San Francisco Dons men's soccer team represents the University of San Francisco in all men's Division I NCAA competitions. They compete in the West Coast Conference and have previously won national championships in 1966, 1975, 1976, and 1980. They are coached by Chris Brown, who was hired in May 2021. Negoesco Stadium
Negoesco Stadium is a 3,000 seat soccer stadium located in San Francisco, on the campus of University of San Francisco. The facility was named in honour of USF soccer coach Steve Negoesco. The stadium is also used by USF students and staff for recreational activities. Stadium history The stadium was renovated in 2000 expanding it to its current capacity of 3,000 seats including theater style seats on the west side of the field and a full permanent grandstand on the east side. Additionally TV capable lights were added to the field that year. In 2003 the current fieldturf surface was added. Negoesco has also hosted a US Open Cup game between the Los Angeles Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer and an international friendly between the Earthquakes and Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League. The California Intercollegiate Soccer Conference was a pre-National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA College soccer in the United States, collegiate soccer conference for colleges across the California. Alejandro Toledo
Alejandro Celestino Toledo Manrique (; born 28 March 1946) is a Peruvian politician who served President of Peru, from 2001 to 2006. He gained international prominence after leading the opposition against president Alberto Fujimori, who held the presidency from 1990 to 2000. He pursued his undergraduate and graduate education at the University of San Francisco and Stanford University. Brandon McDonald (soccer)
Brandon McDonald (born January 16, 1986 in Glendale, Arizona) is an Guamanian-American soccer player. Club career Amateur and college McDonald was an NSCAA High School All-American while playing for Cactus High School and participated in the annual High School All-America game. In addition, he was in the USA National under-17 pool. Before moving to the University of San Francisco in 2004 McDonald played for the Sereno Golden Eagles youth club with Michael Gavin, Rob Valentino and current teammate Robbie Findley. McDonald played over 50 games for the Dons, finishing second on the team in scoring in his freshman year. He also shared the Stephen Negoesco Award for achievement by an underclassmen in 2004. Mike Ivanow
Mike Ivanow (born January 9, 1948 in Shanghai, China) is a retired U.S. soccer goalkeeper who was born in Shanghai, China. He spent eight seasons in the North American Soccer League and was a member of the U.S. soccer team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He also earned ten caps with the U.S. national team between 1973 and 1975. Ivanow attended the University of San Francisco where he played collegiate soccer under renowned coach Steve Negoesco. In 1968, he was an honorable mention as an All American. In 1967, Ivanow played both Olympic qualifying matches against Bermuda. The U.S. tied Bermuda in Bermuda on May 21. Six days later, it lost in Chicago when Ivanow and his team mates thought the referee had awarded Bermuda an indirect free kick only to discover their mistake as Gladwys Daniels easily scored. Josh Hansen
Joshua Randolph Hansen (born January 16, 1982 in Phoenix, Arizona) is an American-born Puerto Rican international football player. Career College Hansen attended Greenway High School and played four years of college soccer at the University of San Francisco, where he won several honors and his exploits included a hat-trick against Saint Mary's College. Professional Hansen spent 2005 with the championship-winning Seattle Sounders of the USL First Division, but saw little playing time. In an attempt to re-ignite his career, Hansen joined the Southern California Seahorses of the USL Premier Development League in 2006, scoring 8 goals in 15 matches. On August 30, 2006, following the conclusion of the PDL season. John Doyle (soccer, Born 1966)
John Joseph Doyle (born March 16, 1966) is an American retired soccer player who played professionally in both Europe and the United States including the Western Soccer League, American Professional Soccer League and Major League Soccer. He was the 1995 A-League Defender of the Year and the 1996 MLS Defender of the Year. He also earned fifty-three caps with the U.S. national team between 1987 and 1994 including two games at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He was a member of the U.S. team at the 1988 Summer Olympics and was most recently the general manager of the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer before resigning on August 29, 2016. Koulis Apostolidis
Kyriakos "Koulis" Apostolidis (Greek: Κυριάκος "Κούλης" Αποστολίδης; born 3 March 1946) is a Greek former footballer. He began his career in the North American Soccer League and finished it with PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece. Apostolidis lead the NASL in goals in 1971 and later earned six caps with the Greece national football team. He has also coached in the Greek First Division, most recently with PAOK Thessaloniki FC. 1980 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship
The 1980 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament was the 22nd organized men's college soccer tournament by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, to determine the top college soccer team in the United States. The San Francisco Dons won their fourth national title (their 1978 title and tournament wins were vacated by the NCAA) by defeating the Indiana Hoosiers in the championship game, 4–3, after one overtime period. Oddly, this was re-match of the 1978 tournament final won by San Francisco but later vacated by the NCAA. The Dons compete in NCAA Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as members of the West Coast Conference (WCC), of which USF is a charter member. History Athletics at USF dates back to its founding in 1855, when founder Anthony Maraschi, S.J. organized ball games as recreation for the first students. However, intercollegiate competition only dates back to 1907, when then-Saint Ignatius College began playing organized baseball, basketball, and rugby against other local colleges and high schools.
