San Barnaba, Mantua
San Barnaba is a Roman Catholic church located at the intersection of Via Giovanni Chiassi and Via Carlo Poma in Mantua, Lombardy, Italy. History The first church at the site was dedicated to St Barnabas, the first bishop of Milan, and was noted at the site by 1263. The church was provided by Francesco I Gonzaga in 1397 to a convent of nuns of the Servite Order. In 1724, the church was rebuilt with a new façade designed by the architect Antonio Galli Bibiena. The adjacent cloister was destroyed in 1900. Mantua
Mantua ( ; it, Mantova ; Lombard language, Lombard and la, Mantua) is a city and ''comune'' in Lombardy, Italy, and capital of the Province of Mantua, province of the same name. Giuseppe Bazzani
Giuseppe Bazzani (23 September 1690 – 17 August 1769) was an Italian painter of the Rococo. Biography Born in Mantua to a goldsmith, Giovanni Bazzani, early on he apprenticed with the Parmesan painter Giovanni Canti (1653–1715). A fellow pupil was Francesco Maria Raineri. He spent most of his life in Mantua. From 1752, he was faculty, and from 1767, director of the ''Accademia di Belle Arti'' of Mantua. While ensconced in a declining provincial city, he absorbed international influences. His loose brushstrokes, fervid and often dark emotionalism, and tortured poses, which recall at times later expressionism, display stylistic tendencies more typical of Lombardy. Numerous artists, including Fetti, Bencovich, Rubens, and Magnasco are said to have influenced him, although the number and diversity of the artists suggested hints that he had an idiosyncratic and unique synthesis for his time. Girolamo Bonsignori
Fra Girolamo Bonsignori, (miscalled Monsignori; 1472–1549) was an Italian artist. Life The brother of Francesco Bonsignori, he was born at Verona. At an early period in his life he became a monk of the order of the Dominicans, and in the church of his monastery he executed some altar-pieces. He at first studied the works of Mantegna, but in his later productions he followed the style of Fiesole. He produced some excellent copies of some of the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, notably, one of the '' Last Supper'', pronounced by Lanzi the best copy ever made of it. It was originally in the library of San Benedetto at Mantua. Alessandro Maganza
Adorazione della Vergine con gli Angeli (1581) Alessandro Maganza (1556–1630) was an Italian painter of the Mannerist style, born and active in Vicenza, as well as in Venice. He likely trained with his father, Giovanni Battista Maganza, also a painter; as well as by Giovanni Antonio Fasolo. He is said to have spent the years 1572–76 in Venice. His first documented work, ''Virgin and Child with Four Evangelists'' (1580) was painted for the monastery built around the basilica and sanctuary of Monte Berico in Vicenza. Maganza also frescoed the inner cupola of Palladio's famous Villa Rotonda located near Vicenza, with allegorical figures in colour, again recalling the Paolo Veronese; he also executed large ceiling canvases in tempera for the South and West rooms. Giuseppe Orioli
Giuseppe "Pino" Orioli (1884–1942) was a Florentine bookseller best known for privately publishing the unexpurgated first edition of ''Lady Chatterley's Lover'' and for his long association with Norman Douglas. Giuseppe Orioli was born in 1884 in Alfonsine, the son of a shopkeeper. He moved to Florence to work in a barber shop when he was 14 years old. He later served in the military and lived in Paris and London for some time after leaving the military and before returning to Florence. In Florence he established a small shop that sold antique books. Orioli's relationship with Norman Douglas began in Florence after Douglas settled there in 1922. St Filippo Benizzi
Philip Benizi (sometimes St Philip Benitius, and in Italian Filippo Benizzi) (August 15, 1233 – August 22, 1285) was a general superior of the Order of the Servites, and credited with reviving the order. Pope Leo X recognised his cult 24 January 1516 essentially beatifying him (although this was not a formal category at the time); and Pope Clement X canonized him as a saint in 1671. Biography Philip Benizi was born on August 15 in the Florentine district of Oltrarno, of the noble family of Benizi. Of his childhood but little is known. He entered the order of the Servites as a lay brother and was sent to a convent three leagues from Florence, where he displayed the utmost diligence. Teodoro Ghisi
Teodoro Ghisi (1536–1601) was an Italian painter and engraver of the Renaissance Period, mainly active in his native Mantua. He specialized in paintings of animal and nature scenes. Teodoro was known mostly for his drawings and illustration of animals. His brother Giorgio Ghisi, was a well-known engraver. Teodoro was a custodian of the Duchal summer house known as the Palazzo del Te in Mantua. The Duke's extensive natural history collection attracted a visit in 1571 from Ulisse Aldrovandi, for whom he executed some animal paintings, including those of two parrots. At around the same time he created the designs for Giorgio's engravings of ''Venus and Adonis'' and ''Angelica and Medoro''. In 1576 he and Giorgio acquired a house in Mantua, where Teodoro worked for Dukes Guglielmo Gonzaga and Vincenzo I.
