Samuel Gordon (New York Politician)
Samuel Gordon (April 28, 1802 – October 28, 1873) was an American lawyer and politician who served as a United States representative from New York, serving two non-consecutive terms from 1841 to 1843, and from 1845 to 1847. Biography Gordon was born at Wattle's Ferry on April 28, 1802. He attended public schools and became a farmer. He later studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Delhi. Early political career Gordon was appointed postmaster of Delhi on September 14, 1831, and held that position until August 16, 1841. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, as district attorney of Delaware County and was town supervisor of the town of Delhi for several terms. Congress In 1840, Gordon was elected as a Democrat to represent New York's 20th District in the 27th Congress (March 4, 1841 – March 3, 1843). Samuel Beardsley
Samuel Beardsley (February 6, 1790 – May 6, 1860) was an American attorney, judge and legislator from New York. During his career he served as a member of the United States House of Representatives, New York Attorney General, United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York, a member of the New York State Senate, and a justice of the New York Supreme Court. Early life Born in Hoosick, New York on February 6, 1790, the son of Obadiah Beardsley and Eunice (Moore) Beardsley. His siblings included Levi Beardsley, who served in both the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. Beardsley's family soon moved to Monticello, an unincorporated village of Richfield, and he was educated in the local schools of his new hometown. He taught school and began the study of medicine with Dr. Joseph White of Cherry Valley, but later decided to pursue a legal career, and moved to Rome, New York to study law with Judge Joshua Hathaway. Eliakim Sherrill
Eliakim Sherrill (February 16, 1813July 4, 1863) was an antebellum United States Congressman from the state of New York and a brigade commander in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Gettysburg defending against Pickett's Charge. Early life Sherrill was born in Greenville, New York, where he attended the public schools. He moved to Herkimer County in 1832. He married Emily Eldridge, a daughter of Judge Eldridge of Madison County. The couple moved to Shandaken in 1838, where Sherrill owned a tannery. He entered local politics, holding several political offices. He served as a major in the State Militia. He was elected as a Whig to the 30th United States Congress, holding office from March 4, 1847, to March 3, 1849. He was a member of the New York State Senate (10th D.) in 1854 and 1855.
