''Same Place the Fly Got Smashed'' is the fourth album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. In James Greer's book, ''Guided by Voices: A Brief History: Twenty-One Years of Hunting Accidents in the Forests of Rock and Roll'', band leader Robert Pollard cites this album as having some of his best songs, describing "Pendulum" as "my favorite lyrics I've ever written." Lyrics and music The sample "You brought me down, you and your family. I did not!" used at the beginning of "Airshow '88" came from the movie ''Shattered Dreams''. The made-for-TV movie came out in 1990, which starred Lindsay Wagner. Frontman Robert Pollard describes the release as "a concept album itha linear story" about an alcoholic who commits a murder and is eventually executed for his crime. Same Place the Fly Got Smashed continues the beginning of the band's lo-fi era, featuring a production value markedly less crisp and clear than their previous releases. James Greer (writer)
James Greer is an American novelist, screenwriter, musician, and critic. As a screenwriter, he is known for writing the children's comedies '' Max Keeble's Big Move'', '' Just My Luck'' and '' The Spy Next Door'', as well as the 2018 thriller '' Unsane''. He lives in Los Angeles. Career Musician/critic Greer was senior editor and senior writer at ''Spin'' magazine in New York City in the early 1990s. He wrote and played on the song "Trendspotter Acrobat" on the album Sunfish Holy Breakfast by Guided By Voices. He was the bassist in the band from 1995 to 1996. Greer started a band in 2012 with French musician Lola G. called DTCV. Pronounced "detective", it was an indie rock duo from Joshua Tree, California. Tobin Sprout (born April 28, 1955) is an American visual artist, musician, songwriter, and children's author. He is best known as a former member of the indie rock band Guided by Voices. He served as a secondary major songwriter and guitarist of the group from 1987 to 1997 and again from 2010 to 2014.
