"Same Ol' Shit", sometimes censored as "Same Ol'", is the first single released from MC Ren's debut solo album, '' Shock of the Hour''. It was released on October 29, 1993 and was produced by Tootie. "Same Ol' Shit" became MC Ren's most successful single chart-wise by making it to #90 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, his only single to make it to that chart. Lorenzo Jerald Patterson (born June 16, 1969), better known by his stage name MC Ren, is an American rapper, songwriter and record producer from Compton, California. He is the founder and owner of the record label Villain Entertainment. MC Ren began his career as a solo artist signed to Eazy-E's Ruthless Records in early 1987, while still attending high school. By the end of 1987, after having written nearly half of ''Eazy-Duz-It'', he became a member of N.W.A. After the group disbanded in 1991, he stayed with Ruthless, releasing three solo albums including the controversial ''Shock of the Hour'' before leaving the label in 1998. In 2016, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A. Shock Of The Hour
''Shock of the Hour'' is the debut album by rapper MC Ren, released November 16, 1993, on Ruthless Records and distributed by Relativity Records. Background After the success of his debut EP ''Kizz My Black Azz'', a follow-up album was promised for an early 1993 release. The EP, which had gone platinum after two months, was released as a promotion for the upcoming album, to be titled ''Life Sentence''. However, in the middle of the recording of the ''Life Sentence'' album, MC Ren suddenly joined the Nation of Islam and converted to Islam with the help of his DJ and friend DJ Train. With a different outlook on the world, MC Ren scrapped the ''Life Sentence'' album, changing the name to ''Shock of the Hour'' and started to record new songs for the album. However, he kept some previously recorded songs and used them for the first half of the album, while the second half contained songs recorded after he converted to Islam, resulting in thematic differences between the albums' halves ...

Gangsta rap or gangster rap, initially called reality rap, emerged in the mid- to late 1980s as a controversial hip-hop subgenre whose lyrics assert the culture and values typical of American street gangs and street hustlers. Ruthless Records was an American record label founded by Eric "Eazy-E" Wright and Jerry Heller in Compton, California in 1986, where all of the Ruthless trademarks have been owned by Comptown Records, Inc. since 1997. Several artists on the label such as N.W.A, Eazy-E, MC Ren, The D.O.C., Michel'le, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony have released RIAA certified albums. Relativity Records was an American record label founded by Barry Kobrin at the site of his company, Important Record Distributors (IRD) in metro New York. Relativity released music that covers a wide variety of musical genres. When it entered into a deal with Sony Music Entertainment, it became more known for its heavy metal and hip hop releases.
