Samuel Turner (Royalist)
Samuel Turner (died c. 1647) was an English physician and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1625 and 1644. He fought on the Royalist side during the English Civil War. Turner was the elder son of the physician and Puritan Member of Parliament Peter Turner, and was the brother of the mathematician Peter Turner. He was educated at St Mary Hall, Oxford being awarded BA in 1602 and at St Alban Hall, Oxford being awarded MA in 1604. He was made a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Padua in 1611. In 1625 Turner was elected Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury. He immediately made himself prominent with attacks on the Duke of Buckingham, calling him ''"the cause of all their grievances"'' and declaring that it was unfit that he should hold so many great offices. Samuel Turner (19April 17592January 1802) FRS was an English Asiatic traveller and a cousin of Warren Hastings, the first Governor of the Presidency of Fort William (Bengal). Early life Turner was born in Gloucestershire, England. India and Tibet After becoming a cadet with the East India Company (EIC) in 1780, Turner was subsequently promoted to ensign. Promotion followed to lieutenant on 8August 1781 and to regimental captain on 18March 1799. In February 1782, news having reached the headquarters of the EIC in Calcutta of the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, Warren Hastings proposed despatching a mission to Tibet with a message of congratulation designed to strengthen the amicable relations established by George Bogle during his 1774 visit to Tibet. Samuel Turner (1765–1807) was an Irish barrister, a Protestant supporter of the United Irishmen in Newry who in 1797 escaped to the European continent, changed loyalties, and informed the British and Irish authorities of United Irish activity and personnel in Ireland, Hamburg, and Paris. United Irishman Samuel Turner was the son of Jacob Turner of Turner's Glen, near Newry, a gentleman of good fortune in County Armagh. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he entered on 2 July 1780, graduating B.A. in 1784, and LL.D. in 1787. Turner was called to the Irish bar in 1788, but does not seem to have practiced. Although no evidence has been found of his previous involvement in democratic politics, in January 1797, by his own account, Turner was admitted not only to the United Irish Society but also to its national directory.
