Saint-Luc, Quebec
Saint-Luc () was a former town in southwestern Quebec, Canada on the Richelieu River. In December 1970, the final members of the Front de libération du Québec who were arrested for their roles in the October Crisis were arrested here. On January 24, 2001, the towns of Saint-Luc, Saint-Athanase, Montérégie, Quebec, Saint-Athanase, Iberville, Quebec, Iberville, and L'Acadie, Quebec, L'Acadie merged into the city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Saint-Luc was located in Le Haut-Richelieu Regional County Municipality. Population: (2001) 20,573. Côte Saint-Luc (; also spelled Côte-Saint-Luc, and known historically in English as Cote St. Luke) is a city on the island of Montreal in Quebec, Canada. Geography Along with Hampstead and Montreal West, Côte Saint-Luc forms an enclave within Montreal. Côte Saint-Luc also has two exclaves sandwiched between Hampstead and the city of Montreal. The larger one contains the residential development north of Hampstead and Decarie Square shopping centre, while the smaller one consists of just fifteen residential buildings on Macdonald Ave. History Incorporated in 1903, Côte Saint-Luc grew from a town to a city in 1958. The Institut Saint-Luc () is an arts school in Brussels, Belgium. It consists of six departments, with a total of 2,200 students and 430 employees, spread over five locations in Ixelles and Saint-Gilles. History The school was founded by members of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a French order created in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste de la Salle in France. Different Saint-Luc institutes were founded all over Belgium with the first in Ghent in 1863. The first school in Brussels was founded in 1882 in Molenbeek and then was later relocated to Schaerbeek in 1887. Work began in 1904 for a new institute in Saint-Gilles, then called the Institut Jean Béthune, and had only 14 students. Construction finished four years later in 1908. The Guild of Saint Luke was the most common name for a city guild for painters and other artists in early modern Europe, especially in the Low Countries. They were named in honor of the Evangelist Luke, the patron saint of artists, who was identified by John of Damascus as having painted the Virgin's portrait. One of the most famous such organizations was founded in Antwerp. It continued to function until 1795, although by then it had lost its monopoly and therefore most of its power. In most cities, including Antwerp, the local government had given the Guild the power to regulate defined types of trade within the city. Guild membership, as a master, was therefore required for an artist to take on apprentices or to sell paintings to the public. Saint-Luc-de-Bellechasse is a municipality in the Municipalité régionale de comté des Etchemins in Quebec, Canada. It is part of the Chaudière-Appalaches region and the population is 485 as of 2009. Originally named Saint-Abdon, it was changed to Saint-Luc-de-Dijon, due to confusion in spelling and difficulties of pronunciation. It was later renamed to Saint-Luc and since 1997, Saint-Luc-de-Bellechasse.
