"Laurel wreath, laurelled"; 31 December AD 225 – 10 August 258) was one of the seven deacons of the city of Rome under Pope Sixtus II who were martyred in the Persecution of Christians, persecution of the Christians that the Valerian (emperor), Roman Emperor Valerian ordered in 258. Earl Of Howth
Earl of Howth ( ) was a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1767 for Thomas St Lawrence, 15th Baron Howth, who was elevated to Viscount St Lawrence at the same time, also in the Peerage of Ireland. The St Lawrence family descended from Christopher St Lawrence who was elevated to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Howth in about 1425. The third and fourth Barons both served as Lord Chancellor of Ireland. The family's origins are thought to go back to Almeric Tristram, a liegeman of the Anglo-Irish knight John de Courcy, who conquered Howth in 1177. The St Lawrence family claimed significant prerogative rights as Lords of Howth over the whole peninsula, and were prepared to maintain their rights even against the English Crown. The fourth baron was Lord Chancellor of Ireland, and a distinguished soldier who fought at the Battle of Knockdoe; his grandson, the seventh baron, was also a notable soldier. The eighth baron, commonly known as "the blind lord", was one of the l ...

Saint Lawrence (Zurbarán)
''Saint Lawrence'' is a 1636-1639 oil on canvas painting by Francisco de Zurbarán. It has been in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg since the 19th century. It was probably commissioned by Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti, archbishop of Bologna, or by the Monastery of San José. The painting shows Saint Lawrence holding a gridiron, the instrument of his martyrdom, and in a rich red dalmatic The dalmatic is a long, wide-sleeved tunic, which serves as a liturgical vestment in the Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, United Methodist, and some other churches. When used, it is the proper vestment of a deacon at Mass, Holy Communion or other ..., showing his status as a martyr and a deacon. On the dalmatic is embroidered an image of Saint Paul, emphasising Lawrence's continuation of Paul's mission to the Gentiles, whilst over Lawrence's left wrist is a maniple, symbolising the chains placed on Christ at his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. The ruins of a pagan temple and green tree ...
