J Sainsbury plc, trading as Sainsbury's, is a British supermarket and the second-largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury with a shop in Drury Lane, London, the company was the largest UK retailer of groceries for most of the 20th century. In 1995, Tesco became the market leader when it overtook Sainsbury's, which has since been ranked second or third: it was overtaken by Asda from 2003 to 2014, and again for one month in 2019. In 2018, a planned merger with Asda was blocked by the Competition and Markets Authority over concerns of increased prices for consumers. Sainsbury's Local (a trading name of Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd) is a chain of 820 convenience shops operated by the UK's second largest supermarket chain Sainsbury's. History In 1998, Sainsbury's piloted its first Local shop in Hammersmith. The shop opened on the busy Fulham Palace Road and was designed for the convenience of customers who did not have time to do a full weekly food shop. Research showed that people were working longer hours and more women were in employment than ever before. Customers needed to spend less time on chores such as shopping, so local ‘top-up’ shopping was an ideal solution. As well as a large range of ready meals, wines and desserts designed for people on-the-go, the branch also offered hot drinks and freshly baked goods, alongside Sainsbury's best-selling products. Sainsbury's Bank plc is a British bank wholly owned by Sainsbury's. The bank began trading on 19 February 1997 as a joint venture between Sainsbury's and Bank of Scotland. Sainsbury's took full ownership of the bank in January 2014. The bank's head office is located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and its registered office in London, England. Habitat is a brand of household furnishings in the United Kingdom. It is owned by the British supermarket chain Sainsbury's, and serves as its main homewares brand, as well as for Argos (retailer), Argos. Founded in 1964 by Terence Conran, Sir Terence Conran, it began as its own retailer, and merged with a number of other retailers in the 1980s to create Storehouse plc, before the latter sold Habitat in 1992 to the Ikano Group, owned by the Kamprad family. It is the United Kingdom's third largest online clothing retailer and the United Kingdom's sixth largest clothing retailer by volume. Nectar is a loyalty card scheme in the United Kingdom run by Nectar 360 Limited, company wholly owned by Sainsbury's. The scheme is the largest in the United Kingdom, and comprises a number of partner companies including Sainsbury's, Esso, Argos and British Airways. It launched in 2002 with initially four partner companies, and by 2010 had grown to include over 14 companies and over 400 online retailers. Simon John Roberts (born 26 January 1971) is a British businessman, and the chief executive officer (CEO) of Sainsbury's since 1 June 2020, having previously been retail operations director. John James Sainsbury
John James Sainsbury (12 June 1844 – 3 January 1928) was an English grocer and founder of what is now called the Sainsbury's supermarket chain. Early and private life John James Sainsbury was born on 12 June 1844 at 5 Oakley Street, Lambeth, to John Sainsbury (baptised 1809, d. 1863), ornament and picture frame maker, and his wife Elizabeth Sarah, née Coombes (1817–1902). During his childhood, his family moved house several times between rented rooms. The area in which they lived was close to the Thames wharves and to Waterloo station, which opened in 1848. Sainsbury started work at the age of 14 years old. He may have stayed at school beyond the normal leaving age of 10 or 11, possibly helping out as a "monitor".
