Sailing At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 1972 Summer Olympics program in Kiel- Schilksee. Seven races were scheduled and completed. 60 sailors, on 29 boats, from 29 nation competed. Race schedule Due to the interruption of the Games on 6 September 1972, the race was postponed till 7 September. Then the race conditions were unsuitable. Heavy fog and poor wind conditions made it not possible to race until 8 September. Also the medal ceremony was also postponed until 8 September. Course area and course configuration For the Flying Dutchman course area B(ravo) was used. The location ''(54°30'30'’N, 10°13'00'’E)'' points to the center of the 2 nm radius circle. The distance between mark 1 and 3 was about 2nm. Rodney Pattisson
Rodney Stuart Pattisson, Order of the British Empire, MBE (born 5 August 1943) is a British yachtsman. He is a double Olympic gold medalist in sailing won at the Sailing_at_the_1968_Summer_Olympics_–_Flying_Dutchman, 1968 Mexico City Olympics and Sailing_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics_–_Flying_Dutchman, 1972 Munich Olympics both in the Flying Dutchman (dinghy), Flying Dutchman class. Simon Korver
Simon Willem Korver (11 June 1940 – 19 October 2009) was a sailor from the Netherlands who represented his native country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Kiel, Germany. With helmsmen Fred Imhoff Korver took the 10th place in the Flying Dutchman. After the Munich massacre during the 1972 Summer Olympics Korver was in doubt if and how to continue. Jacques Stap, the course area coach, finally made him continue to finish the series. Korver was the substitute for the Flying Dutchman during the 1968 Olympics. Fred Imhoff
Ferdinand "Fred" Helmuth Imhoff (born 15 February 1942 in The Hague) is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Kiel, Germany as helmsman in the Flying Dutchman ''Brave Henderik IV'' (H-230). With crew Simon Korver they took the 10th place. Imhoff was the substitute for the Dragon during the 1968 Olympics. During the 1970s Imhoff led the Dutch Yellow Joker Sailing Team, a group of sailors who sailed many Dutch National Classes, like the Solo as well as Flying Dutchman and Yngling. Later Imhoff specialized in keelboat classes in general and belonged to the world top in the Dragon between 1986 and 2006. Imhoff nowadays sails the 2.4 Metre. Murray Ross (sailor)
Murray Ross (born in Whangarei, New Zealand, in 1950) is a New Zealand sailor and yacht designer who competed at the Summer Olympics and in the Whitbread Around the World race. Ross sailed a Flying Dutchman with Jock Bilger, coming second at the 1971 Flying Dutchman World Championships before sailing at the 1972 Olympics, finishing 9th. They again finished second at the 1975 World Championships before competing at the 1976 Olympics, finishing 12th. New Zealand boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics and so Ross did not compete.
