Sailing At The 1964 Summer Olympics
Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad ( 1896 Olympics in Athens Greece. With the exception of 1904 and the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1964 consisted of a total of five sailing classes (disciplines). For each class, seven races were scheduled; these took place from 12 to 23 October 1964 off the coast of Enoshima in Sagami Bay. The sailing was done on the triangular type Olympic courses. Venue At the IOC session in 1959, Japan stated that yachting would take place in the port of Yokohama, as was the plan for 1940. Later, when it became clear that Yokohama was not suitable for Olympic-level sailing, it was decided that yachting events would be held off the coast of Enoshima Island in Kanagawa Prefecture on the bay of Sagami. Sagami Bay
lies south of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshu, central Japan, contained within the scope of the Miura Peninsula, in Kanagawa, to the east, the Izu Peninsula, in Shizuoka Prefecture, to the west, and the Shōnan coastline to the north, while the island of Izu Ōshima marks the southern extent of the bay. Star (sailboat)
The Star is a one-design racing keelboat for two people designed by Francis Sweisguth in 1910. The Star was an Olympic sailing classes, Olympic keelboat class from 1932 through to 2012, the last year keelboats appeared at the Summer Olympics. It is sloop-rigged, with a mainsail larger in proportional size than any other boat of its length. Unlike most modern racing boats, it does not use a spinnaker when sailing downwind. Instead, when running downwind a whisker pole is used to hold the jib out to windward for correct wind flow. Early Stars were built from wood, but modern boats are generally made of fiberglass. Peter Jones Barrett (February 20, 1935 – December 17, 2000) was an American sailboat racing, sailor and Olympic champion. He competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where he received a gold medal in the Star (sailboat), star class with the boat ''North Star'', together with Lowell North. He won the silver medal in the Finn (dinghy), finn class at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
