Sahaptin Language
Sahaptin (), also called Ichishkiin (; Umatilla language, Umatilla: , Yakama dialect, Yakama: ), is one of the two-language Sahaptian languages, Sahaptian branch of the Plateau Penutian languages, Plateau Penutian family spoken in a section of the northwestern plateau along the Columbia River and its tributaries in southern Washington, northern Oregon, and southwestern Idaho, in the United States; the other language is Nez Perce language, Nez Perce (''Niimi'ipuutímt''). Sahaptin is spoken by various tribes of the Washington Reservations; Yakama, Warm Springs, Umatilla; and also spoken in many smaller communities such as Celilo Village, Oregon, Celilo, Oregon. The Yakama Nation tribal cultural resources program has been promoting the use of their traditional name of the language, ' ('this language'), instead of the Salish-derived name Sahaptin. Celilo Village, Oregon
Celilo Village, Oregon is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated Native Americans of the United States, Native American community on the Columbia River in northeastern Wasco County, Oregon, Wasco County in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is near Lake Celilo, the former site of Celilo Falls; it is just south of the community of Wishram, Washington, across the Columbia River. In 2003 about 100 permanent residents lived in 14 dwellings. The site was once a major cultural and trading center, until Celilo Falls was inundated by The Dalles Dam in 1957. The United States Census, 2000, 2000 census reported a total resident population of 44 persons living on a land area of 102.11 acres (0.4132 km). Horatio Hale
Horatio Emmons Hale (May 3, 1817December 28, 1896) was an American-Canadian ethnologist, philologist and businessman. He is known for his study of languages as a key for classifying ancient peoples and being able to trace their migrations. Hale was the first to analyze and confirm that the Tutelo language of some Virginia Native Americans belonged to the Siouan family, which was most associated with the western Dakota and Hidatsa languages. Hale also determined that the Cherokee language spoken by a tribe associated with the Appalachian Mountains and upland areas of the interior American Southeast was one of the Iroquoian family of languages. Cayuse People
The Cayuse are a Native Americans in the United States, Native American tribe in what is now the state of Oregon in the United States. The Cayuse tribe shares a Umatilla Indian Reservation, reservation and government in northeastern Oregon with the Umatilla people, Umatilla and the Walla Walla people, Walla Walla tribes as part of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Walla Walla People
Walla Walla (), Walawalałáma ("People of Walula region along Walla Walla River"), sometimes Walúulapam, are a Sahaptin Indigenous people of the Northwest Plateau. The duplication in their name expresses the diminutive form. The name ''Walla Walla'' is translated several ways but most often as "many waters".
