Safety In Numbers (musical)
''Safety in Numbers'' is an Australian musical with book and lyrics by Luke Hardy and Phillip Scott and music by Phillip Scott. The musical concerns the lives of four people, aged from early 20s to early 40s, sharing an apartment in the inner-Sydney suburb of Glebe: Alex, an ageing, out-of-work gay actor; Elaine, a psychiatric social worker who has left her marriage; Julia, a scatty student finding refuge from a broken family; and Joe, a country boy exploring the bright lights of the city. It was inspired by the writers' own experience of living under similar conditions in London. Productions ''Safety in Numbers'' premiered at the Q Theatre in Penrith, outer western Sydney on 18 May 1982. Directed by Arthur Dicks, the cast included Simon Burke (Joe), Robyn Arthur (Elaine), Frank Garfield (Alex) and Mariette Rups (Julia). Phillip Scott (actor)
Phillip Scott (born 16 August 1952 in Sydney) is an Australian actor, singer, pianist, writer and comedian. Career He has appeared on film as well as in sketch comedy television programs. His television appearances include ''The Dingo Principle'' and ''Three Men and a Baby Grand'', satirical sketch television comedy programs for which he was a writer/performer with Jonathan Biggins and Drew Forsythe. He also appeared with Max Gillies in ''The Gillies Report'' and its sequels, ''The Gillies Republic'' and ''Gillies and Company'', and was a writer/performer on ABC TV's ''The Big Gig'' and a regular writer for ''Good News Week''. He (wrote the music for, played piano) and Max Gillies starred in "Night of National Reconciliation" during 1983 at Kinselas, Taylor Square, Darlinghurst, Sydney. Arthur Frederick Dicks
Arthur Frederick Dicks (1935–1994) was a designer working in the field of theatre and dance, as well as an accomplished actor and artist. He became the first head of design at NIDA, (National Institute of Dramatic Art) in Australia. Born in London, Dicks lived through the Blitz, and was eventually rehoused in the country when his home was destroyed. In his teens he became involved in repertory theatre and acted with Laurence Olivier and Judi Dench; some of these actors he stayed in contact with for the rest of his life. As well as working on his drama skills, he began work as an artist for a prestigious advertising agency. He decided to travel in his twenties and ended up in New York City where he went to work for a leading fashion magazine. Simon Burke
Simon Gareth Burke (born 8 October 1961) is an Australian actor, active in films, television and theatre. Biography Simon Burke began his career at the age of 12, starring in Michael Cove's ''Kookaburra''; a painful look at a dysfunctional working-class family, focusing particularly on an almost autistic young boy. Soon after at the age of 13, Burke starred in Fred Schepisi's acclaimed feature film '' The Devil's Playground'' for which he won the AFI Award for Best Actor at the Australian Film Institute Awards. Ensemble Theatre
The Ensemble Theatre is an Australian theatre company and theatre, situated in the Sydney suburb of Kirribilli, New South Wales. History It is Australia's longest continuously running professional theatre group, having given its first performance in Cammeray Children's Library on 11 May 1958. It relocated to the current premises in the old boatshed on the shore of Careening Cove in 1960. The theatre was founded by Hayes Gordon Officer of the Order of Australia, AO Officer of the Order of the British Empire, OBE along with the Ensemble Studios acting school, which introduced Constantin Stanislavski, Stanislavsky-influenced method acting to Australia. Ensemble Studios was Australia's longest surviving acting school when it closed in 2009.
