The Sablatnig SF-5 was a reconnaissance seaplane produced in Germany during the First World War.Taylor 1989, p.787 Design and development Designed to meet a specification by the Imperial German Navy for a higher-powered replacement for the Sablatnig SF-2s then in service, the SF-5 was a very similar aircraft other than in its choice of engine.Nowarra 1966, p.64Gray & Thetford 1962, p.542 The first batch (serials 968–987) were delivered between January and May 1917, built in the Navy's HFT classification (unarmed reconnaissance aircraft equipped with wireless transmitter and receiver). They were followed by two further batches (1224–1233 and 1352–1371) between July and September. LVG built the type under licence as a trainer aircraft without any radio equipment, delivering 20 aircraft (1017–1036 and 1214–1223) during the second half of 1917. Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft, also referred to as LFG, was a German aircraft manufacturer during World War I. They are best known for their various "Roland" designs, notably the Roland C.II ''Walfisch'' (whale), Roland D.II ''haifisch'' (Shark) and Roland D.VI, although they also produced a number of airships and many experimental designs. Airships Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft formed on April 30, 1908, from the assets of an experimental airship engine company located in Bitterfeld, Motorluftschiff Studiengesellscaft (MStG). Additional funding for the new enterprise was provided primarily by Krupp, AEG, and a local chemical company. The company's offices were located in Berlin along with the factory at Adlershof. The Imperial German Navy or the Imperial Navy () was the navy of the German Empire, which existed between 1871 and 1919. __NOTOC__ The Sablatnig SF-2 was a reconnaissance seaplane produced in Germany during the First World War.Taylor 1989, p.787 Development A refined version of the Sablatnig SF-1, the SF-2 featured a new empennage and was fitted with a radio transmitter.Gray & Thetford 1962, p.539Nowarra 1966, p.78 The prototype (serial 580) had a smaller tail-fin and rudder than the SF-1, but production examples added a large ventral fin. Construction was of wood, skinned i fabric. Operational history Sablatnig delivered six aircraft (navy serials 580–585) between June and September 1916. These were followed by ten machines built under licence by LVG (serials 791–800) between October and December, and ten more built by Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft, LFG (serials 705–714) between April and May the following year.
