Sa'aga Talu Teafa
Sa'aga Talu Teafa is a Tuvaluan politician with his former occupation was being a civil servant. Teafa was previously Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Utilities. Chief Ombudsman He became the country's first chief Ombudsman when he was appointed for a five year term in October 2014. In 2019 he criticised the government of New Zealand for discriminatory immigration requirements which prohibit disabled people from emigrating to New Zealand. Political career Teafa, was elected a member of parliament to represent Niutao on 6 June 2022 following the death of Katepu Laoi in April 2022. In June 2022, Teafa was appointed as Minister for Home Affairs & Agriculture in the Natano Ministry. He was re-elected as a member of parliament in the 2024 Tuvaluan general election. Feleti Teo
Feleti Penitala Teo OBE (born 9 October 1962) is a Tuvaluan lawyer and civil servant. He is the son of Sir Fiatau Penitala Teo who was appointed as the first Governor General of Tuvalu (1978–1986) following independence from Great Britain. In December 2014 at the 11th regular session of the WCPFC in Apia, Samoa, he was appointed the executive director of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). He was a former acting Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum (2008). Teo has also served as Attorney General of Tuvalu (1991-2000) and Director General of the Forum Fishery Agency (2000-2006). Kausea Natano (born 5 July 1957) is a Tuvaluan politician who is serving as Prime Minister of Tuvalu, in office since 19 September 2019. He is also serving as an MP for Funafuti, having also served as the country's deputy prime minister and minister for communications in former prime minister Willy Telavi's Cabinet. Niutao
Niutao is a reef island in the northern part of Tuvalu. It is one of the nine districts (islands) of Tuvalu. It is also one of the three districts that consist of only one island - not counting the three islets inside the closed lagoon. Niutao has a population of 582 (2017 census). Geography There are two lakes (ponds or lagoons), which are brackish to saline. The larger has three islands and a dam. There are three wells from which fresher water sits in a "lens" above the salt water that leaches in through the coral. Older maps show the only village as Tuapa (with the neighbourhood of Angafoulua). The main village is Kulia; another village is Teava. 2024 Tuvaluan General Election
General elections were held in Tuvalu on 26 January 2024. There are no political parties in Tuvalu and all candidates run as independents. Two major issues in the election were the Falepili Union treaty, which requiries both Tuvalu and Australia to "mutually agree" Tuvalu's foreign security arrangements in exchange for allowing Tuvaluans displaced by climate change to immigrate to Australia, and the country's diplomatic recognition of Taiwan within the context of great power competition between the United States and China for influence in the region.
