S-segment
S-segment cars are a European car spotter for ''sport cars''. The cars are often described as sports cars and the equivalent Euro NCAP class is called "roadster sport". Characteristics S-segment cars have a sporting appearance and are usually designed to have superior handling and/or straight-line acceleration compared to other segments. The most common body styles for S-segment cars are coupé and convertible. Rear passenger accommodation is not a priority for S-segment cars, therefore many models are either two-seat cars or have a 2+2 layout with relatively cramped rear seating. Most recent S-segment cars use the commonplace front-engine design (as either an FF layout, FR layout or F4 layout), however the majority of cars with a Mid-engine design or rear-engine design belong to the S-segment. Current models The five highest selling S-segment cars in Europe are the Mazda MX-5, Porsche 911, Ford Mustang and Porsche Boxster/Cayman. File:2016 Mazda MX-5 Sport NAV 1.5 Fro ...

Victorian Railways S Class
The Victorian Railways S class was a class of 4-6-2 express passenger steam locomotive operated by the Victorian Railways (VR) in Australia between 1928 and 1954. Built when the VR was at its zenith and assigned to haul the broad gauge-leg of its Melbourne to Sydney interstate express passenger services, the S class remained the VR's most prestigious locomotive class until the advent of diesel electric locomotives in the early 1950s. They were the first Pacific-type locomotives on the VR, as well as its first 3-cylinder locomotive type. Renowned for their power and speed, in the ten years that followed their introduction the running time of the premier Sydney express service they operated was progressively reduced by one and a half hours. These service improvements culminated in 1937 with the replacement of the ''Sydney Limited'' with the Art Deco streamliner ''Spirit of Progress'', and the S class locomotives were fitted with streamlined casings to match the new train s ...

Victorian Railways S Class (diesel)
The S class are a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the Victorian Railways between 1957 and 1961. History The S class was based on the Electro-Motive Diesel F7 design and were very similar to the GM12 class then being built by Clyde Engineering for the Commonwealth Railways. They were mechanically similar to the 1952 built double ended B class. The first order for 10 locomotives were progressively delivered between August 1957 and February 1958. The first four took the names and numbers of the recently scrapped S class steam locomotives, with all being named after prominent Victorians. An additional eight locomotives were ordered for use on the new North East standard gauge line and delivered between November 1960 and December 1961. The class were initially used on express passenger trains such as the ''Intercapital Daylight'', ''Southern Aurora'', ''Spirit of Progress'' and ''The Overland'', but were also used on fast freights. South Australian Railways S Class
The South Australian Railways S class was a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotives operated by the South Australian Railways. History The S Class locomotives were designed as an express locomotive for the route between Murray Bridge and the border with Victoria. The first 12 were delivered by James Martin & Co in 1894, followed by a further six in 1903/04. They type was notably used to haul the ''Melbourne Express''. The S class had 6'6" driving wheels, the largest of any Australian locomotive, to give it high speeds on low grades. The engines were pushed out of main line service in the 1920s by 600 class locomotives and Brill railcars. They continued to serve on secondary services into the 1950s. Some locomotives even served in shunting duties despite being unsuitable due to their large wheel diameter. The last examples were retired in 1961. S136 was set aside for preservation at Islington Railway Workshops The Islington Railway Workshops are railway workshops in the north ...

WAGR S Class
The WAGR S class was a class of 4-8-2 steam locomotives built by the Midland Railway Workshops between 1943 and 1947 and operated by the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR). Details of Design The S class locomotives were built with a 4-8-2 wheel arrangement, a configuration commonly used in Australia for heavy goods locomotives, smaller driving wheels giving increased tractive effort at the cost of reduced speed. History Background In the 1920s and 1930s the West Australian rail system was thoroughly run down. The vast majority of locomotives were well past their useful service life and many were badly in need of repairs. The P and Pr classes had helped alleviate pressure on aging passenger locomotives when introduced in 1924 and 1938 respectively, but more powerful machines were needed with an order for 10 authorised. Operational history The first three were built in 1943, with the remaining seven deferred while Midland Railway Workshops completed its order for 10 A ...
