Nigerian Breweries Plc, is the largest brewing company in Nigeria. It serves the Nigerian market and West Africa. History Early years The idea to establish a brewery in Lagos was first promoted by Frank Samuel of UAC prior to World War II. But it was not until the war ended that concrete steps were taken to kick start such a project. Market leaders in the sector were all imported brands with the absence of a locally produced beer. UAC did not have a technical history in beer-making, leading the firm to enter into a technical agreement with Heineken and investments from other merchandise companies in Nigeria including John Holt, GBO, SCOA, CFAO and UTC who all took some equity interest in the new company. United Africa Company
The United Africa Company (UAC) was a British company which principally traded in West Africa during the 20th century. The United Africa Company was formed in 1929 as a result of the merger of The Niger Company, which had been effectively owned by Lever Brothers since 1920, and the African & Eastern Trade Corporation. In the early 1930s the United Africa Company was nearly reduced to bankruptcy and as a result it came under the control of Unilever which had just been formed. Unilever had only been created from the merger of Lever Brothers and the Dutch Margarine Union earlier on 3 March 1929. The United Africa Company continued as subsidiary of Unilever until 1987 when it was absorbed by the parent company. Frank Samuel
Frank Samuel (1889–1954) was a British businessman, inventor and philanthropist who was a managing director and later chairman of the United Africa Company (UAC). Life Samuel was born into a family that ran a music business, the business manufactured pianos and other music instruments. His grandfather founded Barnett Samuel and Sons Ltd in 1832, the firm originally traded pen, watch and silverware articles and then clocks before moving into trade in varied musical instruments. By 1913 the firm had developed into a supplier of drums and trumpets for the British army. In 1913, Barnett Samuel introduced 'Decca' talking instrument into the market, Along with his two first cousins, Wilfred and Conrad Samuel, Frank Samuel co-founded Decca Gramaphone Company.
