SANFL Women's League Best And Fairest Award
The SANFL Women's League Best and Fairest Medal is awarded to the best and fairest player in the SANFL Women's League (SANFL) during the home-and-away season, as determined by votes cast by the officiating field umpires after each game. Future and player Courtney Gum was the inaugural winner of the award in 2017, with Lauren Young the youngest winner of the award after her win in 2021, aged just 15 years in her winning season. Criteria Umpires cast their votes for each game independent of eligibility criteria of the players; ''i.e.'' umpires can cast votes for players who have already been suspended during that season if they perceive them to be amongst the best on the ground. In Australian sport, the best and fairest award recognises the player(s) adjudged to have had the best performance in a game or over a season for a given sporting club or competition. The awards are sometimes dependent on not receiving a suspension for misconduct or breaching the rules during that season. In the Australian Football League (AFL), the Brownlow Medal is awarded to the player who, provided he has not been suspended during the season, receives the most votes from the umpires for being the Fairest and Best player in games during the home and away season. In each game, the umpires award three votes to the player they judge to be the best afield in that game, two votes to the second-best player and one vote to the third-best player. The votes are counted at a gala function on the Monday preceding the Grand Final. SANFL Women's League (also known as the SANFLW or the Hostplus SANFL Women's League) is the major state-level women's Australian rules football league in South Australia. History The league was launched in February 2017, initially comprising four clubs from the men's South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Courtney Gum
Courtney Gum (born 25 September 1981) is a retired Australian rules footballer who most recently played for the Adelaide Football Club in the AFL Women's competition (AFLW). She previously played two seasons with the before announcing a retirement in 2019, then reneging to reenter the AFLW draft later that same year. After winning best and fairest in the inaugural season of the SANFL Statewide Super Women's League, Gum was drafted by Greater Western Sydney with their third selection and twenty-fifth overall in the 2017 AFL Women's draft. She made her debut in the six point loss to at Casey Fields in the opening round of the 2018 season. For her outstanding season she was named the AFL Players Association's Most Valuable Player in 2018. Gum announced her retirement in March at the end of the 2019 season. The Magarey Medal is an Australian rules football honour awarded annually since 1898 to the fairest and most brilliant player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), as judged by field umpires. The award was created by William Ashley Magarey, then chairman of the league. The current recipient is Aaron Young. History William Magarey was born in Adelaide, South Australia. A lawyer by vocation, he had an enduring interest in sports, although he did not play football. He was, however, an active sports administrator who, in 1897, became the inaugural Chairman of the South Australian Football Association (later renamed the SANFL). The sport at that time was known for often rough play, and Magarey wanted to help combat this, and help gain more respect for umpires.
