S. R. Kanthi
Shivalingappa Rudrappa Kanthi (21 December 1908 - 25 October 1969) was the Chief Minister of Karnataka (then, Mysore State) for a brief period in 1962. He hailed from Lingayat caste in Hungund in Bagalkot district (formerly Bijapur district) in the northern part of Karnataka. A member of the Indian National Congress (INC), he served as the Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 1956 to 1962. Kanti was Chief Minister of the State for a brief period of 96 days in 1962. Later, as Education Minister in the S. Nijalingappa Cabinet he was instrumental in the establishment of Bangalore University and Kittur Rani Chennamma Sainik Schools. His centenary celebrations were held in 2008. He belonged to Banajiga sub-sect of Lingayat community. Mysore State
Mysore State, colloquially Old Mysore, was a state within the Dominion of India and the later Republic of India from 1947 until 1956. The state was formed by renaming the Kingdom of Mysore, and Bangalore replaced Mysore as the state's capital. When Parliament passed the States Reorganisation Act in 1956, Mysore State was considerably enlarged when it became a linguistically homogeneous Kannada-speaking state within the Republic of India by incorporating territories from Andhra State, Bombay State, Coorg State, Hyderabad State, and Madras State, as well as other petty fiefdoms. The Karnataka Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral legislature of the Indian state of Karnataka. Hungund or Hunagunda is a taluk in the northern district of Bagalkot in Karnataka, India. Major towns in the taluk are Amingad, Hunagunda. Kudalasangama, where the social reformist Basavanna died, is located in the taluk. Hunagunda Taluk also contains Aihole and Pattadkal which were once under the rule of Chalukyas of Badami.
