S. N. Gorakshakar
S. N. Gorakshakar (1891-?) was an Indian artist, illustrator and cartoonist, best known for his cartoons for the Illustrated Weekly of India. Work and Career Gorakshakar had no formal education in art, though he was encouraged by the artists M. V. Dhurandhar and Haji Ahmed Shivji. He was fascinated by art from childhood and carved a career for himself as a well-known illustrator and applied artist. He participated in major art exhibitions held in Simla, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata. He had his own independent commercial art studio and won several prizes for his applied art. Gorakshakar was known initially for his paintings in the academic style, which were critically appreciated in their time. In 1921 the Calcutta Review wrote that he deserved special mention as a painter of genre and romantic subjects. Gorakshakar also painted portraits in oil. Illustrated Weekly Of India
''The Illustrated Weekly of India'' was an English-language weekly newsmagazine publication in India. It started publication in 1880 (as ''Times of India'' Weekly Edition; later renamed as ''The Illustrated Weekly of India'' in 1923) and ceasing publication in 1993. Also simply known as ''Weekly'' by its readership, ''The Illustrated Weekly of India'' was considered to be an important English-language publication in India for more than a century. The magazine was edited by Sean Mandy, A. S. Raman, Khushwant Singh, M. V. Kamath, and Pritish Nandy. A. S. Raman was the first Indian editor of ''The Illustrated Weekly of India'', succeeding Sean Mandy. Khushwant Singh took over as editor nearly a year after Raman's formal departure. In between, assistant editor Subrata Banerjee edited the magazine for about 20 months. Cartoons in the latter half of the magazine were by R. K. Laxman and Mario Miranda. Calcutta Review
The ''Calcutta Review'' is a bi-annual periodical, now published by the Calcutta University press, featuring scholarly articles from a variety of disciplines. History The ''Calcutta Review'' was founded in May 1844, by Sir John William Kaye and Reverend Alexander Duff (missionary), Alexander Duff. Through the journal, Sir John Kaye aimed "to bring together such useful information, and propagate such sound opinions, relating to Indian affairs, as will, it is hoped, conduce, in some small measure, directly or indirectly, to the amelioration of the condition of the people". The periodical proved to be successful, and was published as a quarterly up until 1912. Sir John Kaye was Editor of four issues, and then retired due to ill health. He remained the owner of the review until 1855, when it was purchased by Meredith Townsend. Thacker, Spink and Company bought it in 1857.
