S. Muthiah
Subbiah Muthiah, (13 April 1930 – 20 April 2019), was an Indian writer, journalist, cartographer, amateur historian and heritage activist known for his writings on the political and cultural history of Chennai city. He was the founder of the fortnightly newspaper '' Madras Musings'' and the principal organizer of the annual Madras Day celebrations. Muthiah was also the founder-President of the Madras Book Club. Early life and education Muthiah was born in Pallathur in the Ramnad district of Madras Presidency, British India in a Nagarathar family on 13 April 1930. Muthiah had his early schooling in Ladies' College, S. Thomas' Preparatory School and Royal College in Colombo and completed his matriculation in India in 1946 at Montfort European School, Yercaud. Between 1946 and 1951, Muthiah studied arts and engineering in the United States of America and returned to Ceylon after obtaining his master's degree in International Relations in 1951. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours, knight if male or dame (title), dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. ''The Times of Ceylon'' was an English language daily newspaper in Sri Lanka published by Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL). It was founded in 1846 as the ''Ceylon Times'' and was published from Colombo. It ceased publication in 1985. History The ''Ceylon Times'' started on 11 July 1846 using the printing press of the defunct '' The Ceylon Herald''. The newspaper was established to oppose ''The Observer'' and promote the mercantile interests of British colonials. Initially it was published on Tuesdays and Fridays. In 1858 the paper's owners Wilson, Ritchie & Co. sold it to John Capper, a former sub-editor of '' The Globe''. Capper sold the paper to Alexander Allardyce in 1874 and returned to Britain. ''Madras Rediscovered: A Historical Guide to Looking Around'' is a book on the history of Chennai (previously known as Madras) authored by Chennai historian S. Muthiah. Originally titled ''Madras Discovered'', the first edition was published in 1981. Since then, the book has emerged a bestseller and has run into eight editions. A Tamil translation of the book ''Chennai Marukandupidippu'' by C. V. Karthik Narayan was published in 2009. Editions The first edition titled ''Madras Discovered'' was published in 1981 by East-West Books. It was 160 pages long and priced at Rs. 10. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu is the chief executive of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In accordance with the Constitution of India, the governor is a state's ''de jure'' head, but ''de facto'' executive authority rests with the chief minister. Chennai Book Fair (earlier Madras Book Fair) is an annual book fair organized in Chennai (the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu) by the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI). The fair typically lasts for about two weeks during the New Year-Pongal (festival), Pongal season, that is between the last week of December and the third week of January. The House of Representatives was the lower chamber of the parliament of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) established in 1947 by the Soulbury Constitution.
