Società Sportiva Verbania Calcio, shortened as Verbania, is an Italian association football club located in the town of Verbania, Piedmont. Currently it plays in Serie D. History The club was founded in 1959 after the merging of Libertas Pallanza and Verbania Sportiva that was founded in 1947 and played the season, 1947–48, in Serie C, the third level of Italian football. The new club spent the majority of its history in the semi-professional and regional levels of Italian Football, in Serie D and Eccellenza; but in the early period of its history, it played 7 seasons in Serie C (currently Lega Pro Prima Divisione), from 1966–67 to 1972–73. In 2006 the sports title was transferred from A.S.D. Verbania Calcio to A.S.D. Amici del Verbania, which the former was liquidated. Verbania (, , ) is the most populous ''comune'' (municipality) and the capital city of the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. It is situated on the shore of Lake Maggiore, about north-west of Milan and about from Locarno in Switzerland. It had a population of 30,827 at 1 January 2017. Carmel Busuttil
Carmel Busuttil (born 29 February 1964), nicknamed "Il-Bużu", is a Maltese former professional footballer who played as a striker. Regarded as one of the best Maltese players of all time, he began his career with his hometown club Rabat Ajax winning two Premier League titles, two Super Cups and an FA Trophy. After a year spell with Verbania in Italy, Busuttil joined Genk in 1988. He was a prominent figure in the Belgian side, where he served as club captain and was the team's top scorer for three consecutive seasons. Busuttil returned to Malta to join Sliema Wanderers where he won another Premier League title. He finished off his career in 2001 as one of the highest goalscorers in Premier League history with 93 goals. At international level, Busuttil made his debut for the Maltese national team in 1982. Eccellenza Piedmont-Aosta Valley ( it, Eccellenza Piemonte-Valle d'Aosta) is the regional Eccellenza football division for clubs in the regions of Piedmont and Aosta Valley, Italy. It is competed amongst 36 teams, in two different groups (A and B). The winners of the Groups are promoted to Serie D. The Serie D () is the top level of semi-professional football in the country. The fourth tier of the Italian league system, the competition sits beneath the third professional league, Serie C. It is administered by the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti and is organized by the Roman ''Comitato Interregionale'' (Interregional Committee), a "league in the league" inside the LND. History In 1948 the three leagues running Division 3 (Serie C) had to be reorganized due to an ever-growing number of regional teams. FIGC decided not to relegate the excess teams to regional championships. Lega Pro Prima Divisione
Lega Pro Prima Divisione was the third highest football league in Italy. It consisted of 33 teams, divided geographically into two divisions of 16 and 17 teams for group A and B respectively. Until 2008 it was known as Serie C1. Before the 1978–79 season there were only three leagues of professional football in Italy, the third being Serie C. In 1978, it was decided to split Serie C into Serie C1 and Serie C2. Serie C2, the fourth highest professional league in the Italian system, was also renamed in 2008 and was called Lega Pro Seconda Divisione.
