S.N. Sangmpam
S. N. Sangmpam (born 1953) is a Congolese American professor, author, and political analyst. He teaches comparative political economy, international relations, and African American politics in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and in the Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University. Education and career He received his MA and PhD in political Science at the University of Chicago. Prior to this, he received a Master in International Affairs from Ohio University and a Master in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. He has also received his B.A. in Political Science and Public Administration from the National University of Zaire. Congolese Americans are Americans descended from the peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Republic of the Congo, which themselves include a large variety of ethnic groups. In the 2000 US Census, 3,886 people of Congolese descent were reported. Another 1,602 specified that they were descended from people from Zaire and less than 300 people indicated that they hailed from the Republic of Congo. Rose Mapendo, who suffered as a result of the war, has helped 2,000 refugees to emigrate into the United States through the organization Mapendo International. The National University of Zaire (french: Université nationale du Zaïre, or UNAZA) was a federated university in Zaire (the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo). It was formed in August 1971 when the country's three existing universities and 17 technical colleges were merged into a single administrative structure. It was briefly known as the National University of the Congo (''Université nationale du Congo'', or UNACO) until the Democratic Republic of the Congo became Zaire in October 1971.
