Rügen Narrow-gauge Railway
The Rügen narrow-gauge railway (German: Rügensche Bäderbahn, formerly Rügensche Kleinbahn or RüKB) – nicknamed ''Rasender Roland'' ( "Raging Roland") – is a steam-powered narrow-gauge railway that runs from Putbus by way of Binz, Sellin, and Baabe to Göhren on the island of Rügen off the Baltic Coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Since 2008, it has been run by the Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Pressnitztalbahn mbH. There is an interchange with the island's Deutsche Bahn mainline network via the Veolia-run OLA railways. The ''Rasender Roland'' is one of the island's tourist attractions. It serves several holiday destinations, mainly the bathing resorts in Rügen's southeast. The railway runs regularly along a stretch of 24 km (14.5 mi.) of track with historic steam locomotives and coaches, some of which are almost a hundred years old. A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Bug (Rügen)
Bug is the name both of the westernmost tongue of land (''Landzunge'') on the peninsula of Wittow on the German island of Rügen, as well as the name of the former village there. Bug begins south of the village of Dranske and belongs territorially to that municipality. Origin of the name One theory suggests the name ''Bug'' goes back to a landowner, Baronet Antonius de Buge, first mentioned in 1284. Another suggests that the word Bug is derived from the German word ''Biegung'' = "bend". It is also possible that it may have come from a Slavic word ''bug'' = beech. The Wittow Ferry (german: Wittower Fähre) is a ferry service for foot passengers and vehicles (up to a total weight of 30 t each) from the heart of the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen, the Muttland, to the peninsula of Wittow to the north. It has also given its name to the parish of ''Wittower Fähre'' in the municipality of Wiek. This lies on the Rassower Strom at the tip of the tongue of land between the lagoons of Wieker Bodden and Breetzer Bodden on its northern shore. On the southern shore the ferry landing stage is located between the villages of ''Vaschvitz'' and ''Fischersiedlung'' in the municipality of Trent. Trent is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Parchtitz is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Geography and transport Parchtitz is about 3 kilometres northwest of Bergen auf Rügen and lies on the Duwenbeek, the only large stream on Rügen.
