Ryman Arts
Ryman Arts is a nonprofit fine arts education organization that is based in Los Angeles, California. Ryman Arts was co-founded in 1990 as the Ryman-Carroll Foundation by Leah and Martin Sklar, Ann and Buzz Price, Walt Disney's daughter Sharon Disney Lund, and Lucille Ryman Carroll, to honor Herbert Ryman. The organization provides free art classes in drawing and painting with master teachers to Los Angeles area high school students. It began with 12 students and by 2007 the program had expanded to include roughly 300 students from 80 Los Angeles-area high schools. Classes are held on Sundays at the Otis College of Art and Design and on Saturdays at Cal-State Fullerton. There are classes in the mornings and afternoons, each lasting 3.5 hours. The courses offered are Beginning Drawing, Intermediate Drawing with intro. to Watercolor painting, and Advanced Painting. Martin A. "Marty" Sklar (February 6, 1934 – July 27, 2017) was a scriptwriter and construction developer. He was The Walt Disney Company's international ambassador for Walt Disney Imagineering, the subsidiary of the company which designs and constructs Disney theme parks and resorts across the world. He was formerly vice president of Concepts and Planning for the company, before being promoted to president, then vice chairman and principal creative executive before his final role. Harrison Alan "Buzz" Price (May 17, 1921 – August 15, 2010) was a research economist specializing in how people spend their leisure time and resources. Price guided Walt Disney in the siting and development of Disneyland in Southern California and of Walt Disney World in Central Florida. Early life and education Price was born in Oregon City, Oregon on May 17, 1921, and moved with his family to San Diego in 1930. Garnett Lucille Ryman Carroll, stage name Jane Starr (born Garnett Lucille Ryman; June 10, 1906 – October 23, 2002) was an American Broadway actress and the first female studio executive in Hollywood. Early life Garnett Lucille Ryman was born in Macon County, Illinois, to Dr. Herbert D. Ryman and Cora Ryman. while he was at Kansas State Medical College. He died in France while a field surgeon during World War I when Carroll was 12 years old. Carroll graduated from Decatur High School in Decatur, Illinois, and in 1926 she graduated from Millikin University, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and acted in plays. Herbert Dickens Ryman Jr. (June 28, 1910 – February 10, 1989) was an American artist and Disney Imagineer. Ryman worked in watercolor, oils, and pen & ink sketches. In 1953 Ryman drew the first illustrations of Walt Disney's vision of a theme park that eventually became Disneyland. Early years and education Ryman was born on June 28, 1910 in Vernon, Illinois, son of Dr. Herbert D. Ryman (1878-1918) and Cora Belle Ryman ( Norris, 1876-1963). His family moved to Decatur, IL when he was age 9. While attending Millikin University, he became deathly ill with scarlet fever.
