Ryesgade
Ryesgade is a street straddling the border of the Nørrebro and Østerbro districts of Copenhagen, Denmark. Together with Ravnsborggade, its continuation to the south, it forms the backbone of a small neighbourhood bounded by The Lakes to the east, Blegdamsvej to the west, Nørrebrogade to the south and Østerbrogade to the north. The busy artery Fredensgade and the adjacent Fredens Park, effectively separates the Nørrebro and Østerbro portions of Ryesgade from each other. Ryesgade was formerly known for its many second-hand stores of which a few still exist today. History Planning and street names The area between Sortedam Lake and Blegdamsvej was formerly the site of a row of narrow lots with bleaching pongs. The plans for the new street was first presented in around 1860 as part of the plans for redevelopment of the area. Battle Of Ryesgade
The Battle of Ryesgade was a nine-day series of street fights in mid-September 1986, in the Copenhagen street Ryesgade. It was the most violent event in a long-standing conflict between the Copenhagen City Council and the city's community of squatters. Faced with an ultimatum to leave their illegally occupied housing or face eviction, the squatters instead fortified the streets around their building so strongly that it became a cop-free zone. They took advantage of this lack of control by burning down a building belonging to the Sperry Corporation. For nine days, massed police unsuccessfully attempted to evict the squatters. The civil disorder was of a magnitude never before seen in Denmark. After communicating a manifesto through the media, the defenders finally abandoned the squat and dispersed without being apprehended. Benny Goldschmidt
Benny Goldschmidt (2 October 1810 - 8 November 1892) was a Jewish-Danish businessman and philanthropist. He was one of the two owners of Goldschmidt & Nordholm and the founder of Goldschmidts Stiftelse at Ryesgade 19 in Copenhagen. Early life and education Goldschmidt was born on 2 October 1810 in Copenhagen, the son of J. S. Goldschmidt (1774-1850). His father had established his own dyeing plant in 1800. Benny Goldschmidt apprenticed as a dyer in Viborg. Career Goldschmidt returned to Copenhagen to manage his father's factory in 1835 and became the owner of the factory in 1842. Its name was changed to Goldschmidt & Nordholm when he in 1869 entered into a partnership with Swedish dyer Anders Nordholm (born 1848) and a new wool yarn dyeing plant was that same year inaugurated at Ryesgade 23. Ravnsborggade
Ravnsborggade (literal translation, lit. "Ravnsborg Street") is a street located one block west of The Lakes, Copenhagen, The Lakes in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. It runs from the major shopping street Nørrebrogade in the southwest to Sankt Hansgade in the northeast where it turns into Ryesgade. The street is traditionally known for its many antique shops but they have increasingly been supplanted by cafés and restaurants in the 2010s. Camillus Nyrop
Camillus Nyrop (18 February 1811 - 24 December 1883) was a Denmark, Danish instrumentmaker and bandagist. He was the founder of Camillus Nyrops Etablissement, Denmark's first manufacturer of surgical instruments and artificial lims. Early life and education Nyrop was born on 18 February 1811 in Riserup on Falster, the son of provost Christopher Ntrop (1752-1831) and his second wife Cathrine Elisabeth Magdalene Heilmann (1765-1842). Niels Sigfred Nebelong
Niels Sigfred Nebelong (14 October 1806 – 9 October 1871) was a Danish architect who worked in the Historicist style. Frederiksberg () is a part of the Capital Region of Denmark. It is formally an independent municipality, Frederiksberg Municipality, separate from Copenhagen Municipality, but both are a part of the City of Copenhagen. Hans Jørgen Holm
Hans Jørgen Holm (9 May 1835 – 22 July 1916) was a Danish architect. A pupil of Johan Daniel Herholdt, he became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and a leading Danish proponent of the National Romantic style. Nørrebro Bryghus is a Danish microbrewery located in the Nørrebro neighborhood of Copenhagen. They have an annual production of 50,000-60,000 hectoliters.
