Rwanda National Rugby Union Team
The Rwanda national rugby union team represents Rwanda in international rugby union. Rwanda are an associate member of the International Rugby Board (IRB), and have yet to play in a Rugby World Cup qualifying tournament. The Rwanda national team made their international debut in a match against Zambia national rugby union team, Zambia in 2003, lost by 9-107, for the Confederation of African Rugby, CAR Division 2. They won their subsequent international against Burundi national rugby union team, Burundi by 18-5. Claude Ezoua
Claude-Aimé Ezoua (born 2 October 1956) is a French-born Ivorian rugby union coach and a former player. He was called to be Ivory Coast national rugby union team, Ivory Coast head coach and achieved a surprise qualification for the 1995 Rugby World Cup. The Ivorians played rather poorly in their opening match, losing to Scotland national rugby union team, Scotland by 89-0, but performed better the following match, losing by 54-18 to France national rugby union team, France, in a game where they scored two tries. They had a closer result with Tonga national rugby union team, Tonga, losing by 29-11, but the game was marked by tragedy due to the accident that hit player Max Brito. Ezoua left the national team after the tournament. He continued his coach career aftwards and was coach of Swiss Rugby Club CERN since 2007/08 to 2009/10, managing to reach the First Division in his first season. The Rugby World Cup is a men's rugby union tournament contested every four years between the top international teams. The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body. The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, who according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game. Rugby union in Rwanda is a minor but growing sport. The national team is currently ranked 95th by World Rugby Governing body The sport is governed by the Fédération Rwandaise de Rugby. History Rwanda is a former colony of Belgium, and the game was first introduced from there. Rwandan rugby had a low key but steady presence in colonial times; however, it went into decline post-Rwandan independence, and the horrors of the 1990s war also damaged the game beyond repair. However, the aid agencies which arrived in the wake of that tragedy have reintroduced the game, which is being taken up by many of the young. One person in particular has said: "in my combined years I have yet to witness the passion and desire to play rugby as I did in Rwanda.
