Ružomberok District (''okres Ružomberok'') is a district in the Žilina Region of central Slovakia. Until 1918, the district was part of the county of Kingdom of Hungary of Liptov. Districts Of Slovakia
An okres (in English district) is an administrative unit in Slovakia. It is a second-tier territorial administrative unit, below a Regions of Slovakia, Region in standing, and superior to a municipality. Each district contains at least several municipalities. The cities of Bratislava and Košice are the only cities in Slovakia divided into internal urban districts, with five in Bratislava, and four in Košice. These urban districts are then further divided into smaller boroughs (which serve a function analogous to municipalities in typical districts). All other districts are larger in size and also include rural areas, and rural as well as urban municipalities. Each of these more typical districts has an urban centre serving as the seat of the district, usually the largest town (or the only town) of a given district. Ružomberok
Ružomberok (; german: Rosenberg; hu, Rózsahegy; pl, Rużomberk) is a town in northern Slovakia, in the historical Liptov region. It has a population of around 27,000 inhabitants (45,000 with nearby villages). Etymology The name of the initial settlement located on today's Makovický street was ''Revúca'' ( Slovak "roaring", derived from the Revúca river). In its neighborhood, German colonists build a new settlement ''Rosenberg'' named after wild roses growing in the area. This name was later adopted by Slovaks as ''Ružomberok''. Geography It is situated at the westernmost reaches of the Sub-Tatra Basin, more exactly its subdivision Liptov Basin, surrounded by the mountain ranges of Chočské vrchy, Greater Fatra and Low Tatras. Lisková
Lisková ( hu, Liszkófalu) is a village in the Ružomberok District of north-central Slovakia. It lies at an elevation of 484 m and has an area of 15.95 km². It had a population of 2,077 in 2011. History In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1252. Of interest is Lisková Cave, a 1,900 m Guttenstein limestone formation from the middle Triassic. A cultic statuette of a horned bull was found in the cave. Other finds include the remains of a copper-age secondary burial (Lengyel culture), stone tools, and a mammoth tooth. The finds included the forehead of a human skull, which was destroyed in 1956. The remains were the first evidence of Pleistocene settlement in the territory of present-day Slovakia.
